NFL Training Camp News (August 15): Justin Simmons Signs With Falcons, Malik Nabers Returns, Brandin Cooks Exits Practice, and More

Justin Simmons signing with the Atlanta Falcons headlines today's NFL training camp news, which includes a starting wide receiver exiting practice.

Football never sleeps. While the 2024 NFL regular season is still weeks away, teams around the league are deep into training camp practices preparing for Week 2 of the preseason. Now that the camps are in full swing, clubs’ decision-makers can get a better idea of how their rosters look before Week 1.

With that in mind, we’re tracking every bit of news coming out of training camps. Here are the top stories from Thursday’s NFL practices.

    NFL Training Camp News Tracker

    Atlanta Falcons

    Buffalo Bills

    • According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, an important member of the Buffalo Bills defense is expected to miss extended time. According to Schefter, linebacker Matt Milano, who left Tuesday’s practice injured, tore his bicep and now will be out indefinitely. Milano will undergo surgery on his torn bicep with the hope of trying to return later this season, possibly in December

    Carolina Panthers

    • Thursday’s practice produced a scare for the Panthers. According to several sources in attendance, Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard stayed down on the ground after taking a hit and continued to do so while a scrum ensued. However, Hubbard was able to pop up and walk to the sideline under his own power, with head coach Dave Canales stating it was a slip, not a hit, that had the running back down momentarily.
    • While the Panthers seemed to have dodged something significant with Hubbard, they were not as lucky for cornerback Dane Jackson and safety Xavier Woods. According to Canales, Jackson is likely out for six weeks due to a hamstring injury, while Woods is set to miss a few weeks with a groin issue.

    Cleveland Browns

    Dallas Cowboys

    • Fresh off of another joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday, quarterback Dak Prescott is full-go and practicing with his team on Thursday afternoon. It’s noteworthy because last week, following the same plan, Prescott did not participate the following day, ensuring that the quarterback is fine health-wise, with no concern with his ankle or anything else.
    • While Prescott doesn’t appear to be dealing with an issue, the same can’t be said for Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks. According to Nick Harris of the Dallas Cowboys team site, Cooks was seen heading towards the medical tent early in Thursday’s practice before eventually heading back to the locker room for further evaluation. It was later reported that Cooks is dealing with knee soreness that doesn’t appear to be of high concern right now.
    • Dallas has been dealing with a laundry list of injuries so far through training camp, and as a result, the team is looking to sign outside free agents to fill the gaps. That looks to be the case for EDGE Carl Lawson, who is expected to sign with the Cowboys on Thursday. Lawson worked out for the team two weeks ago and is set to join the club ahead of the weekend.

    New York Giants

    • Good news for the Giants, as first-round pick Malik Nabers practiced fully on Thursday. Head coach Brian Daboll also states that Nabers has a chance to play against Houston in the Giants’ second preseason game on Saturday.
    • The team also waived veteran defensive back Jalen Mills on Thursday. Mills was on the NFI list with a calf strain.
