As the summer wears on, the 2022 NFL offseason continues, with training camps now getting underway. The start of training camp means we are creeping ever closer to the start of the NFL preseason and the season itself. Let’s take a look at when each of the 32 NFL teams is reporting for their 2022 training camps, and where the franchises are basing themselves for this period.
When and where are the 2022 NFL training camps?
All of the NFL teams have an element of choice when it comes to starting training camp. However, they have that choice within the framework of the NFL-NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Within the rules laid out in the CBA, there is clear guidance for when teams can have players report to training camp, both for veterans and rookies.
The rules laid out in the CBA allow teams starting their season on a Thursday or Sunday to have their veterans report no earlier than 47 days before that game. Teams starting their season the Monday of Week 1, have a slight variation, with their veterans able to report 48 days before the game. The only two teams to who this does not apply are those playing in the Hall of Fame Game. Both of those teams can have their veterans report 15 days prior to their appearance in that game.
That all means that the earliest any NFL team could report to training camp in 2022 was Wednesday, July 20, when the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders can both begin their programs. The next landmark is Saturday, July 23, which is the date the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills can report to camp. The remaining 28 teams can have their veterans report no earlier than Tuesday, July 26.
Each team has the option under the CBA to have their rookies report before the veterans. The timeframe allowed for the rookies is a maximum of seven days before the veterans. Different teams will take different approaches, with some having veterans and rookies reporting simultaneously, while others will stagger it.

Who will be attending NFL training camps?
The date for reporting to training camp is mandatory. Therefore, all players on the team’s current roster are expected to attend, regardless of injury or tenure status. The NFL returned to 90-man roster sizes for the 2021 season and is expected to remain there for the 2022 season.
Last season, we also saw the NFL adjust the structure regarding how they cut down the roster. There were three cut-down dates for teams to reduce their roster from 90 to the 53-man requirement to open the season. The three stages saw teams reduce their roster to 85, 80, and 53.
What should we expect from training camps?
Much like the way the start dates for training camp are closely controlled by the CBA, so is the process for the beginning of training camp. There is a five-day acclimatization period followed by an off day. Only then will players wield pads for the first time as they head into two-a-day practices.
During the five-day acclimatization period, the following ramp-up process takes place. The first day is dedicated to physicals, meetings, and classroom instruction. Players can take to the field only for running and conditioning.
On Days 2 and 3, players can wear helmets, and special protective shirts are allowed for full-speed practice. Days 4 and 5 see players wearing “shells and spiders” for full-speed practice. At no point during those first five days is live contact permitted.
