Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly open for business, as they have now started taking trade calls on several defensive players, including Josh Sweat.
Earlier this offseason, the Eagles gave defensive end Haason Reddick permission to seek a trade. Now, Sweat’s name has also appeared in trade conversations as the Eagles rework themselves for 2024.
NFL Trade Rumors: Eagles Having Trade Calls on Josh Sweat
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Eagles are currently having trade calls on defensive end Josh Sweat.
The Eagles drafted Sweat in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. In 2021, Sweat signed a three-year, $40 million contract extension to keep him with the Eagles after a very promising start to his career.
This news comes right on the heels of the Eagles allowing their other defensive end, Haason Reddick, to pursue a trade just two years into his Eagles tenure. Reddick is a sack machine, producing 27 sacks in just two seasons with the Eagles.
After firing Sean Desai, the Eagles hired Vic Fangio to retool their defense for the 2024 season. Apparently, part of that overhaul includes listening to trade calls for Sweat, who is still only 26 years old and already has 35 career sacks.
The Eagles finished the season 11-6, good for second place in the NFC East behind the Dallas Cowboys. They were eliminated on Wild Card Weekend by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and lost five of their last six games in the regular season.
In that 32-9 playoff exit against the Buccaneers, the Eagles’ defense was not very good, allowing Baker Mayfield to throw for 337 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Evans was not even much of a factor, catching just three passes for 48 yards. Rachaad White added 72 yards on 18 carries. It was clear that the Eagles needed a big change defensively after that loss.
However, of the Eagles defenders that played well during that playoff loss, Sweat did sack Mayfield once and had four tackles.

Over the last three seasons, Sweat has started 46 games for the Eagles, making him a cornerstone piece on that side of the football. Along with his 35 career sacks, he has an interception, 196 combined tackles, and 45 tackles for loss. He was a Pro Bowler in 2021.
Since the Eagles will probably be moving on from Reddick and Sweat at some point this offseason, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini is reporting that Philadelphia could “aggressively pursue” free agent defensive end Bryce Huff. Huff has played his first four seasons with the New York Jets, recording 17.5 sacks in 54 games.
