Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones spoke during this weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan and dropped a nugget about next week’s NFL trade deadline that seems like a new philosophy from years past.
From the current NFL standings to team depth charts to coverage of every game in the 18-week NFL schedule, we have all the news from around the league to keep you up to speed!
Will the Dallas Cowboys Make Any Trades?
Teams across the NFL have until Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. ET to make a trade with other teams ahead of this year’s deadline.
When Jones was asked if the Cowboys would be interested in making a trade, he said they wouldn’t be the ones to initiate trade talks and the opportunity would have to come to them to consider making any moves.
“The initiations of an opportunity to make a trade to make a trade at this time that would help us principally has to start over on the other end,” said Jones.
The Dallas owner said this doesn’t show a lack of aggression from the Cowboys, but it just shows where the starting point would be. Jones ultimately likes the current roster and where it stands, adding, “I like where we are with our personnel today, and so I’m not thinking in any way that we need to upgrade our roster.”
When asked why the Cowboys’ front office is following this specific philosophy, Jones said there are areas in which they could engage with trade deals under particular circumstances to improve the team overall.
But he feels the best chance to get something like this done is when it comes from other teams, and they can take the opportunity to make it happen that way.
“To go out and push it, the odds of getting it done at the price or the trade conditions, or the price that you would expect is dreaming,” said Jones.
Overall, Jones said he would “really extend” to improve the team because he feels Dallas is currently a contender for success, saying, “Would I do something that would take away from this team so it would help us in the future? Probably not.”
Does Jerry Jones Have a New Reputation?
It was noted in the conversation that Jones’ reputation of being a big spender has since dwindled to become more conservative, to which he said if people looked at the bigger picture of the situation, they would still see the Cowboys take risks.
The owner added, “I’m confident that we got the balance right. There are times when you take more risk, you go for it a little bit. There are times that you keep it close to the vest.”

Jones added he doesn’t lose sleep at the thought of leaning one way or another because he has been around too long. While he’s not a different person from the last 20 years when it comes to taking a risk worth taking, it’s not something he bases decisions on.
Jones feels that some of the team’s best success came during opportunities the front office had to make decisions involving risk.
