NFL Trade Deadline: Brian Burns to Seahawks, Derrick Henry to Ravens, and More Deals That Make Sense Before Oct. 31

    Published on

NFL trade deadline action is already underway. Here are 10 more deals that make sense before the Oct. 31 deadline.

The NFL Oct. 31 trade deadline is just days away, and we’ve already seen plenty of player movement. Chase Claypool, Randy Gregory, Van Jefferson, Mecole Hardman, and Kevin Byard were all dealt over the past month.

There should be more action before the Nov. 1 deadline, so let’s have some fun and project 10 trades that could go down in the coming days.

From the current NFL standings to team depth charts to coverage of every game in the 18-week NFL schedule, we have all the news from around the league to keep you up to speed!

    2023 NFL Trade Deadline Proposals

    Seahawks Instantly Replace Uchenna Nwosu

    • Seahawks acquire: EDGE Brian Burns
    • Panthers acquire: 2024 first-round pick, 2025 second-round pick, EDGE Darrell Taylor

After a surprising 2022 playoff run, the Seahawks are contenders again this season thanks in no small part to their defense, which has improved from 26th in EPA per play last year to ninth in 2023.

But Pete Carroll’s club lost a significant piece in Week 7 when pass rusher Uchenna Nwosu suffered a season-ending pectoral injury. Seattle signed Nwosu as a free agent last offseason, and he performed so well in 2022 — 13th in pressures league-wide — that the Seahawks gave him a three-year extension this spring.

With Nwosu out, it’s time for Seattle to take a big swing. Brian Burns is perhaps the most talented player potentially on this year’s trade market, but the Carolina Panthers won’t give him away for free. Remember, they reportedly turned down two first-rounders and a second from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Burns at last year’s deadline.

Seattle might not have to give up as much as the Rams offered a season ago, given that Burns is now a year closer to free agency. But a first and a second over the next two years, plus a speculative add in pass rusher Darrell Taylor, might be enough to pry Burns loose from Carolina.

The Seahawks won’t view Burns as a rental if they sacrifice that sort of package to acquire him, so they’ll also sign him to a five-year, $125 million extension once he officially lands in Seattle.

While the Seahawks are expected to reunite with edge defender Frank Clark, his addition won’t preclude the team from going after Burns.

    Ravens Find RB, Pass-Rush Help

    • Ravens acquire: RB Derrick Henry, EDGE Denico Autry
    • Titans acquire: 2024 fourth-round pick, 2025 fifth-round pick, WR Tylan Wallace

The Ravens torched the Lions on Sunday, fully establishing themselves as an elite team and perhaps making you think that general manager Eric DeCosta doesn’t need to make any moves ahead of the trade deadline.

But Baltimore’s Week 7 win should make them even more aggressive over the next week, as John Harbaugh’s club needs to supplement an already excellent roster in order to make a Super Bowl run.

Let’s send Derrick Henry to the Ravens — and while Baltimore has Tennessee on the phone, they can convince the Titans to throw in veteran pass rusher Denico Autry, too.

Gus Edwards and Justice Hill have done a decent job as the Ravens’ backfield pair, but both have been banged up this season. Rookie UDFA running back Keaton Mitchell is week to week after picking up a hamstring injury.

Henry might not be the weapon he used to be, but he can still help Baltimore close out games and wear down opposing defenses. And Autry can bolster a Ravens pass rush that leads the NFL in sacks but ranks just 14th in pass-rush win rate and 25th in pressure rate.

Cowboys Give Dan Quinn Another CB

    • Cowboys acquire: CB Rasul Douglas
    • Packers acquire: 2024 fifth-round pick

The Cowboys acquired CB Noah Igbinoghene from the Dolphins, but that trade was more about depth than anything. Igbinoghene is a former first-round pick, but he was never a realistic candidate to replace Trevon Diggs.

Instead, Dallas has shifted slot corner DaRon Bland to the outside to play alongside Stephon Gilmore. He’s been excellent, but Jourdan Lewis has struggled inside.

Would the Cowboys consider adding another outside CB and moving Bland back to the nickel?

Rasul Douglas has spent time inside and outside during his NFL career, so he’d give Dallas options. He’s also under contract through 2024, so he could stick on the Cowboys’ roster and take over for Gilmore, who is scheduled to reach free agency next spring.

    Chiefs, Patriots Make Deadline Swap

    • Chiefs acquire: WR Kendrick Bourne and DT Lawrence Guy
    • Patriots acquire: 2024 sixth-round pick, OT Lucas Niang

The Chiefs already re-acquired Hardman from the Jets last week, but they still seem to be in the market for another receiver. Patrick Mahomes had no problems against the Broncos on Sunday, throwing for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns, but one more pass catcher couldn’t hurt.

Kansas City could also use more depth along the interior defensive line. Chris Jones is an All-Pro, but the Chiefs haven’t gotten much from Derrick Nnadi, Tershawn Wharton, and their other defensive tackles through seven weeks.

Luckily, the Patriots can offer the Chiefs an available WR and DT in one tidy package.

Kendrick Bourne was a popular name at the 2022 trade deadline but was not ultimately moved. He’s come on strong over the past two weeks, totaling 16 catches for 152 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders and Bills. Bourne is hardly a world-beater, but he’s far more reliable than the likes of Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Guy staged a mini-holdout over the summer as he sought a new contract from New England. He never received that new deal and remains under contract through 2024 at a modest salary. Guy would instantly become a solid rotational option for Kansas City’s front.

Eagles Add One More Pass Rusher

    • Eagles acquire: EDGE Yannick Ngakoue, 2025 seventh-round pick
    • Bears acquire: 2025 sixth-round pick

The Eagles fortified their secondary by picking up Byard from the Titans this week and recently signed veteran Julio Jones to supplement their WR corps. Philadelphia doesn’t have a ton of other weaknesses remaining, but you know general manager Howie Roseman is itching to make another move.

Another cornerback could be on the docket if Darius Slay or Bradley Roby’s injuries linger, but the Eagles are built primarily through the trenches. Roseman made a last-second deal for a Bears pass rusher in 2022, and he could do it again this year.

Robert Quinn didn’t do much for Philadlephia last season, but maybe Yannick Ngakoue can give the Eagles a midseason boost. Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat are stars for Philly, but the club probably wants to ensure the 35-year-old Brandon Graham doesn’t play too many snaps down the stretch.

Ngakoue is a pure sack artist who struggles in run defense. But he could be a valuable addition for the Eagles if deployed correctly.

Bills Locate Their Matt Milano Replacement

    • Bills acquire: LB Frankie Luvu
    • Panthers acquire: 2024 fourth-round pick, 2025 seventh-round pick, LB Baylon Spector

Buffalo has suffered so many devastating defensive injuries that any move on that side of the ball would probably make sense. The Bills could use another cornerback with Tre’Davius White out for the year, while defensive tackle DaQuan Jones’ season-ending injury shed light on the club’s interior DL depth.

But linebacker might be Buffalo’s most significant issue. Matt Milano is one of the best LBs in the NFL, and the Bills have struggled to replace him since he went down with a fractured leg in Week 5.

On Sunday, Buffalo initially used third-round rookie Dorian Williams in Milano’s vacated weakside linebacker spot, but he was eventually benched in favor of Tyrel Dodson. The Bills are also working in a first-year starter in Terrel Bernard, further complicating the second level of their defense.

The Panthers’ Frankie Luvu isn’t Milano, but he could be a decent facsimile over the rest of the season. He looked like a down-ballot Defensive Player of the Year candidate in 2022 and is one of the league’s top off-ball LB blitzers.

Jags Find a Cheap Pass-Rushing Option

    • Jaguars acquire: EDGE Carl Lawson, 2025 seventh-round pick
    • Jets acquire: 2025 sixth-round pick

Jacksonville needs to find another pass rusher before the deadline. But the Jaguars probably don’t want to invest too much on the edge, given that they just used the 2022 No. 1 overall pick on Travon Walker and will have to give Josh Allen a hefty extension in the near future.

Instead, Jacksonville will turn to a salary dump candidate in Carl Lawson, who has been a healthy scratch for the Jets twice this year and has played just 73 defensive snaps.

Lawson signed a three-year, $45 million deal with New York in 2021 but missed his debut season after rupturing his Achilles during a joint practice. He was effective last year, ranking 27th among edge rushers in PFF’s pass-rush win rate, but Lawson has been marginalized in 2023.

Lawson already accepted a pay cut heading into this season, so he’ll only have roughly $3 million remaining on his contract after this week. The Jaguars can probably convince the Jets to pay down at least half that total.

    Lions Bolster Defensive Backfield Options

    • Lions acquire: CB Bryce Hall
    • Jets acquire: 2024 fifth-round pick

The Lions tried to rebuild their secondary over the offseason. While Cameron Sutton has been an outstanding addition through seven weeks, fellow CB Emmanuel Moseley ruptured his Achilles in his first game back from an ACL recovery.

Jerry Jacobs has always been underrated, and he’s more than capable of taking over for Moseley. But a knee injury kept him out of Sunday’s loss to the Ravens. Will Harris, an acceptable backup slot corner, was stretched on the outside.

Detroit should contact the Jets about Bryce Hall, who started New York’s last two games with D.J. Reed sidelined but profiles as a backup behind Reed and Sauce Gardner. Hall is a free agent at season’s end. If Gang Green doesn’t want to retain the former fifth-round pick, they could try to get something for him now.

Injuries Force Dolphins To Add Guard

    • Dolphins acquire: G/C Daniel Brunskill
    • Titans acquire: Conditional 2026 sixth-round pick

Miami’s banged-up offensive line struggled in the Dolphins’ Week 7 loss to the Eagles, and general manager Chris Grier might be forced to make an addition before the deadline. Center Connor Williams (groin) has missed three of the last four games, while left guard Isaiah Wynn (quad) went to injured reserve on Tuesday.

A player with guard/center flexibility would be ideal for the Dolphins, and the Titans happen to have just the player Miami needs.

MORE: Biggest Weakness for Every NFL Contender Before the Trade Deadline

Daniel Brunskill cannot only play all three interior line positions (and moonlight at tackle if needed), but he already has plenty of experience with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. Brunskill made 40 starts for the 49ers from 2019-2021 while McDaniel was San Francisco’s run game coordinator, so he should be able to instantly step in without having to work to pick up Miami’s offensive scheme.

If the Dolphins want to aim slightly higher, they could target Broncos guard Quinn Meinerz. Miami defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was Denver’s head coach when it made Meinerz a third-round pick in 2021.

Browns Forge Reunion for OL Depth

    • Browns acquire: OT Chris Hubbard
    • Titans acquire: Conditional 2026 seventh-round pick

Cleveland is searching for an offensive lineman, as The Athletic’s Dianna Russini recently reported, and Chris Hubbard is intimately familiar with the Browns. Hubbard spent the 2018-22 campaigns in Cleveland, working as a starter for the first three and change.

While the Browns made no effort to re-sign Hubbard this offseason, they could use another body up front. Left guard Joel Bitonio has missed time, center Ethan Pocic has gotten nicked up in games, left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. is struggling, and right tackle Jack Conklin is already on IR.

Hubbard has played well for the Titans, but Tennessee can turn right tackle back to Nicholas Petit-Frere now that he’s returned from his sports betting suspension.
