Following a notable spring trade, the Washington Commanders are moving forward with former Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz under center this season. In order to set Wentz up for success, the Commanders will need to re-stock the shelves of their depth chart in the 2022 NFL Draft. Let’s take a look at Washington’s team needs as April’s draft approaches.
Washington Commanders team needs in the 2022 NFL Draft
The Commanders haven’t been all that active during the free agency period, and despite giving up a third-round pick to the Colts for Wentz, seem to be more focused on the draft to improve their squad.
Washington needs reinforcements at tight end and wideout to make Wentz more effective. The franchise QB’s best seasons came when he could rely on several playmakers to hit in the passing game.
Below are the Commanders’ team needs entering the draft.
Wide Receiver
Outside of Pro Bowl wideout Terry McLaurin, the Washington receiver depth chart leaves a lot to be desired. Curtis Samuel is a constant injury headache, Dyami Brown is still just getting his feet wet in the NFL, and Kelvin Harmon and Cam Sims are best as deep depth pieces. The Commanders should take advantage of this year’s strong wideout class.
Quarterback
While the Commanders coughed up two third-round picks for Wentz, they should still keep their eyes on the future at the QB spot. Wentz has worn out his welcome with two different franchises in less than a year, and there are reasons to believe his third stop could have a similar result. The Commanders need to plan for the present and future.
Safety
After dropping Landon Collins, Washington still has a solid starting duo of Bobby McCain and Kamren Curl, but the depth behind them is weak. Adding another safety to the mix, especially one who can play both positions, would be an ideal outcome on Day 2 or 3.
Linebacker
Like at safety, the Commanders have a solid linebacker duo in Jamin Davis and Cole Holcomb, but their overall depth at the position is rough. The Commanders should target a linebacker prospect on Day 3 to improve the insurance behind Davis and Holcomb.
Tight End
With Logan Thomas coming off a season-ending knee injury, the Commanders need to pad their depth behind him. John Bates has been a nice find, and Sammis Reyes is an intriguing prospect, but adding young competition to the room should push both to improve and enhance the insurance at the position.
