List of NFL Stadiums With Grass or Turf

Across the 30 NFL stadiums, 15 use turf and 15 feature real grass. Let's examine each field's playing surface.

Across the 30 NFL fields, which use grass and which use turf? There are 15 stadiums that currently use turf and 15 that feature real grass.

In 1965, the Houston Oilers became the first NFL team to adopt Astroturf. When they opened the Houston Astrodome, the grass didn’t grow, so they had no choice but to find an alternative and landed on Astroturf. Once other NFL franchises realized that Astroturf was cheaper and didn’t require the same upkeep as real grass, they also pivoted to turf.

Unfortunately, one downside is that players suffer non-contact injuries at a higher rate on turf than on grass. NFL injury data from 2012 to 2018 found that players had a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf. Additionally, players were 69% more likely to suffer non-contact foot and ankle injuries on turf fields than on natural grass.

This is obviously concerning, and it’s caused some teams to seriously consider switching from turf to natural grass. The NFLPA has also pushed for teams to make this switch, stating: “NFL clubs should proactively change all field surfaces to natural grass. This data is clear, so everyone involved with our sport should be similarly motivated to make this switch.” A recent NFLPA survey found that 92% of players prefer grass over turf, 6% were indifferent, and just 2% preferred turf.
