What Can We Expect To See From the Prime-Time NFL Officiating Crews in Week 7?
There is mixed news when it comes to the referees we will see in primetime on Sunday and Monday. Novak’s crew is averaging 12.83 penalties per game through the first six weeks — the sixth-highest average in the NFL to this point.
The crew is especially tough on false starts and offensive holding. Granted, false starts are often not a judgment call, but 24 of their 77 flags have been on those two penalties. They have also called a combined 15 flags for defensive pass interference and defensive holding.
Allen’s crew sits just behind Novak’s, averaging 12.8 penalties per game. Intriguingly, Allen’s crew has been easier on the home team this year. They have thrown just 27 penalties on the home side compared to 37 on the road team. Just once this year has the home team been more penalized than the road team by this crew (Week 4, Rams vs. 49ers).
Allen’s crew is even pickier on false start and offensive holding penalties than that of Novak. Allen’s crew has thrown 26 flags across those two calls. Meanwhile, they have called seven defensive holding penalties, five neutral zone infractions, and three defensive pass interference penalties. This crew is tied for the second-fewest defensive pass interference calls in the league.
