The NFL refs are under the microscope after a flag-filled holiday

Every season, the NFL refs are at some point the center of attention. However, in 2021, it has felt that way more than ever in prime-time games. A couple of weeks back was the situation with Cassius March being “bumped” and flagged for taunting, which caused an uproar.

However, on Thanksgiving, things really reached a new level. Drawing an assignment on Thanksgiving is often tough for an NFL referee. The officials are put in a national spotlight when fans are sitting at home with little else to do than eat turkey and watch football. Those fans were certainly critical of the performance of Shawn Hochuli and his crew on Thursday.

During the game between the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders, each team was flagged 14 times for more than 100 yards in penalties. The total count was 28 penalties for an incredible 276 yards. There were another three flags on the Cowboys that were declined and two more that were offsetting penalties.

That has ramped up the pressure on the referees this weekend. With the calling of games being discussed widely on social media and in the wider media, every little mistake or missed call will be highlighted this weekend. The pressure is especially on for Jerome Boger and Clay Martin’s crew, who are the NFL refs with the prime-time assignments on Sunday and Monday.
