PFSN’s Running Back Impact (RBi) assigns a numerical score and a letter grade to an individual running back's performance. While the grade depends largely on rushing explosiveness and efficiency, we also weigh receiving and pass blocking efficiency. In addition, running backs who take a higher share of their team's carries will get a boost compared to those who shine in a more divided backfield committee.
A running back must average six rushes per team game to qualify for the season and game leaderboard. While that doesn’t sound like much, it gets a running back to just over 100 carries over a full 17-game season.

James Cook, Buffalo Bills
James Cook had far and away the most efficient season for an NFL running back in 2025, leading the league with a 90.1 PFSN RB Impact Score. He was the only player to finish with an "A" grade, and judging by his performance, it's not hard to see why. He led the league with 1,621 rushing yards, coming in fourth among running backs with 12 rushing touchdowns. Not only did Cook get a ton of rushing yards, but he was also very effecient with them; his 5.2 yards per carry tied for the second-most among all 53 qualified running backs. His ability to create big plays significantly helped the Buffalo Bills, as he also placed in the top seven in the NFL in both his boom-bust rate (1.9%) and elusive rate (38.2%).
De'Von Achane, Miami Dolphins
On a Miami Dolphins team that didn't have much to look forward to on gamedays in 2025, De'Von Achane was a massive bright spot. His 1,350 rushing yards ranked fifth in the NFL, and he ended the season with the No. 2 overall PFSN RB Impact Score that year. His 5.7 yards per carry were far and away the highest among qualified running backs, as he came in a whole half yard per carry ahead of second place. A big part of that consistency was just how athletic he is; his 41.2% elusive rate was the highest in the NFL. Achane also proved to be a reliable receiving back, as he ranked sixth among running backs with 67 catches and fourth with 488 receiving yards.
D'Andre Swift, Chicago Bears
When the Chicago Bears signed D'Andre Swift in 2024, he didn't necessarily live up to the hype at first. With a better offensive line and a new offensive play caller in Ben Johnson, though, Swift came back to life in 2025. He finished with a career-high 1,087 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, and his 4.9 yards per carry marked his highest average since his 2022 season with the Detroit Lions. His athleticism really shined in the Bears' zone-based run game, as he finished No. 3 in the NFL with a 1.3% boom-bust rate, making him one of just four qualified running backs with a positive percentage. His 38.6% elusive rate was also No. 4 in the league. Swift's big-play ability and creativity in space makes him the perfect complement to Kyle Monangai's physical, downhill running style in Chicago's offense.
