NFL QB Room Report: Daniel Jones Cleared, Battles Commence for Patriots, Broncos, and Others

    Published on

Some teams are set at quarterback, while others are still looking for answers. We analyze all 32 NFL QB rooms ahead of the season.

As NFL training camps begin, teams across the league will get the first look at their rosters and analyze what they have to work with this season. While some teams are set at the quarterback position, others are not.

We examine all 32 QB rooms across the NFL and dissect each team’s group ahead of the 2024 season.

Breaking Down Every NFL Team’s Quarterback Room

From proven and capable stars like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson and their backups to the uncertainty that awaits teams who drafted a rookie QB early this year. There are questions and situations unfolding on all 32 rosters. We go over all of them and give a preview of every quarterback in the NFL.

Arizona Cardinals: Kyler Murray, Desmond Ridder, Clayton Tune

While his future was uncertain at one point due to uneven play and injuries, Kyler Murray heads into 2024 looking to be the man in Arizona. Talent was never the issue for Murray, as the organization worried more about his commitment and health than his ability.

Murray flashed at times in 2023, providing enough belief in him to build around as he is under contract with Arizona through the 2028 season. Keeping him in the fold and playing well is the most financially advantageous thing for the organization.

Beyond Murray, Desmond Ridder comes over after a short stint with the Atlanta Falcons, looking for a refresh and a change of scenery. Clayton Tune heads into Year 2 with the Cardinals, looking to show why he belongs on the 53-man roster once again after brief appearances in action last season.

Atlanta Falcons: Kirk Cousins, Michael Penix Jr., Taylor Heinicke, John Paddock

Kirk Cousins comes to Atlanta from Minnesota after signing a four-year, $180 million deal, all while nursing an Achilles tear that forced him to miss much of last season. When healthy, Cousins has proven to be a more-than-capable NFL quarterback and has had strong moments of individual success throughout his career.

On the surface, when you see the addition of Cousins and his newly signed deal, one would assume he may be the QB of the future in Atlanta. However, the Falcons chose to use their first-round pick on former Washington Huskies QB Michael Penix Jr. this year, setting the stage for an awkward situation in 2024 and beyond.

When does Penix take over, and will he do so in the next four years? If he doesn’t, then the selection looks even worse than before. Looking at the situation in totality also provides a bit of a head scratch in regards to Cousins’ new deal.

The Falcons also have journeyman QB Taylor Heinicke, who has proven to step up in spots and be a gritty performer, while rookie John Paddock is fourth on the depth chart.

Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson, Josh Johnson, Devin Leary, Emory Jones

Fresh off of the second league MVP of his career, this is Lamar Jackson’s room, and there isn’t much more to it after that. The Ravens, thanks in large part to Jackson and his play, look to be one of the best teams in the NFL once again in 2024.

Beyond him is well-traveled journeyman Josh Johnson, as well as rookies Devin Leary and Emory Jones. Of the three, only Johnson figures to factor much into this season, with the hope that neither Leary nor Jones needs to see the field in 2024.

Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen, Mitchell Trubisky, Shane Buechele

The Bills go as Josh Allen goes, and in 2024, that may never be truer. With a lot of turnover taking place in Buffalo this offseason, the burden of success has never been heavier on Allen’s shoulders. He’s proven to be turnover-prone at times but is still widely viewed as one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks because of his rare talent and skill set.

Behind Allen are veteran Mitchell Trubisky and third-year quarterback Shane Buechele. Trubisky enters his eighth NFL season and second stint with the Bills, with the first coming in 2021.

Carolina Panthers: Bryce Young, Andy Dalton, Jack Plummer

Bryce Young needs to improve in Year 2. With a more concerted effort to add talent around him and help build an offense more suitable to his skills, Carolina is hopeful 2024 will look far better than last year did.

Long-time NFL veteran Andy Dalton figures to be his backup once again, and despite being QB2 last year, he looked better than Young at times when called upon. Rookie Jack Plummer rounds out the group and may not factor much into the 2024 season if all things go to plan.

Chicago Bears: Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent, Brett Rypien, Austin Reed

It’s a new day in Chicago, and the Bears’ faithful are hoping Caleb Williams is the answer they’ve long been waiting for. The talented, charismatic, and captivating QB prospect comes into Chicago with a heap of expectations thrust onto him and an organization ready to get back to winning.

Beyond Williams are returning backup Tyson Bagent, veteran Brett Rypien, and rookie Austin Reed. With Williams already being named the starter, Rypien and Co. look to serve more as complementary pieces, helping Williams through his first season.

Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow, Jake Browning, Logan Woodside, Rocky Lombardi

Joe Burrow is the man in Cincy, and as he looks to be good to go following last year’s wrist injury, the Bengals are right back in the mix in the AFC as a result.

QB2 Jake Browning is back again after stepping up when Burrow went down last year. Although he’s not Burrow by any stretch, he proved capable of running the offense if called upon.

The man rounding out the group is third-year pro, Logan Woodside, who spent the previous two seasons with the Falcons. Now in Cincinnati, Woodside will look to latch on as QB3 in 2024.

Cleveland Browns: Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston, Tyler Huntley, Dorian Thompson-Robinson

Despite Deshaun Watson struggling as of late, the Browns boast one of the more impressive QB rooms in the NFL. There’s no doubt that it’s Watson’s group as he leads the charge, but having long-time veteran Jameis Winston in the fold is a comfortable feeling for Cleveland.

Added are Tyler Huntley, a Pro Bowler with the Ravens at QB3, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who impressed as a rookie last season. The Browns could easily trade a piece or two from this group and get more back in compensation than some may think.

Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott, Trey Lance, Cooper Rush

Dak Prescott is the man; at least, that’s true for 2024. While Dallas works towards a possible extension, every day that it doesn’t get done casts a bit more doubt surrounding his long-term future with the Cowboys.

Nevertheless, Prescott is fresh off a season where he was second in MVP voting and led the NFL in touchdown passes — setting up what should be another quality season. Behind him, though, is why some feel like Prescott may not be around much longer.

The Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick last season for former first-round pick Trey Lance. Some believe Lance could be Dallas’ quarterback of the future, but for now, he needs to worry about beating out Cooper Rush for QB2.

Denver Broncos: Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham, Zach Wilson

As incomplete of a QB room as the NFL has to offer, the Broncos have far more questions than answers.

Denver drafted Bo Nix to potentially be the guy, while Jarrett Stidham occasionally showed promise last season. Add in the fact they traded for Zach Wilson fresh off of a disappointing tenure with the Jets, and the Broncos room is full of wonder right now.

Detroit Lions: Jared Goff, Hendon Hooker, Nate Sudfeld

Jared Goff and the Lions were one game away from the Super Bowl last year, and they expect to be around there again in 2024. Goff has settled in nicely in Detroit and has begun to get more respect around the league following his progression.

Behind him is intriguing former Tennessee Volunteer Hendon Hooker, who was injured for much of last season. The Lions used a draft pick on Hooker and hope to develop him further. Meanwhile, NFL journeyman Nate Sudfeld is another veteran in the room looking to latch on as QB3.

Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love, Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt, Jacob Eason

The Packers have again found their QB of the future in Jordan Love. From Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, now Love, the Packers have this QB thing down cold.

Love is on the brink of a new deal that should make him one of the highest-paid NFL quarterbacks, and he earned it all from one season of action.

Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt, and Jacob Eason are behind him. A combination of journeymen and inexperience sets up a scenario where Green Bay’s success truly rests on Love’s shoulders.

Houston Texans: C.J. Stroud, Davis Mills, Case Keenum, Tim Boyle

C.J. Stroud looks to be the next budding NFL superstar on the rise, and his sensational rookie year in 2023 has those in Houston rightfully pumped up about the new year. Stroud came into the NFL and instantly brought validity to the Texans, and Houston hopes he can build on that in 2024 and beyond.

Davis Mills was once the starter; now he figures to be the backup once again while veterans Case Keenum and Tim Boyle will battle it out in camp to secure the QB3 job.

Indianapolis Colts: Anthony Richardson, Joe Flacco, Sam Ehlinger, Kedon Slovis

Anthony Richardson showed such promise early on as a rookie before an injury cut it short. Fast-forward to the present day, and there’s hope that the young quarterback will be able to continue to progress in Year 2.

After a playoff appearance with the Browns last season, Joe Flacco is now in the fold in Indianapolis to be the Colts’ QB2, while former Texas Longhorn Sam Ehlinger and rookie Kedon Slovis round out the group.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence, Mac Jones, C.J. Beathard

Fresh off a brand new deal that makes him one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL, Trevor Lawrence hopes to take the Jaguars to new heights in 2024. He dealt with a laundry list of injuries last season but battled all year long, showing his toughness. Now Lawrence and the Jags are hoping to take it up a notch this year.

QB2 figures to be New England Patriots former first-round pick Mac Jones after the Jaguars traded for him this offseason, followed by veteran C.J. Beathard, who was the QB2 last year behind Lawrence.

Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes, Carson Wentz, Chris Oladokun, Ian Book

Simply the best. Mahomes is the man at the top of the NFL. And despite the great talent around the league at the position, no one looks close to dethroning him anytime soon.

Not much needs to be said about the back-to-back Super Bowl champion, who’ll continue to do what he does with the Chiefs in their quest to make it three in a row.

Beyond him is Carson Wentz, who’s looking to settle in with an organization after hopping around over the last few years, followed by Chris Oladokun and Ian Book.

Las Vegas Raiders: Aidan O’Connell, Gardner Minshew, Anthony Brown Jr., Carter Bradley

Another QB room similar to the Broncos, but not to that severity. Nevertheless, the Raiders head into 2024 with several of their own questions.

Is it Aidan O’Connell again, or will it be Gardner Minshew? It starts there and flows down, with a camp battle surely to settle it once and for all.

Anthony Brown Jr. and Carter Bradley are also in the group and will duke it out for the right to be QB3.

Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert, Easton Stick, Max Duggan, Casey Bauman

Justin Herbert is supremely talented, that much is clear. Now, it will be about parlaying that talent into sustained success, which has been far easier said than done for the Chargers since his arrival.

Easton Stick, Max Duggan, and Casey Bauman round out the group that looks to back him up.

Los Angeles Rams: Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, Stetson Bennett, Dresser Winn

Matthew Stafford is viewed as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC, and the Super Bowl champion looks to get back to the promised land in 2024. Under Sean McVay, Stafford has shined, and that’s expected to continue.

The group as a whole is deep, and once Jimmy Garoppolo is done serving his two-game suspension, he figures to be a formidable QB2. He’s followed by intriguing second-year player Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn, who’s back after being on the team last season.

Miami Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa, Mike White, Skylar Thompson, Gavin Hardison

Much like some of the quarterbacks we’ve mentioned earlier, Tua Tagovailoa is looking for a new contract. There’s hope it can get done in training camp. While that gets sorted out, it’s clear this is Tua’s squad, and the high-flying Dolphins offense looks to continue that attack in 2024.

Veteran Mike White, Skylar Thompson, and Gavin Hardison round out the group. Both White and Thompson have experience playing for Miami.

Minnesota Vikings: Sam Darnold, J.J. McCarthy, Nick Mullens, Jaren Hall

When will the J.J. McCarthy era begin in Minnesota? This year’s first-round pick figures to factor in early, but just how early remains to be seen. Until then, veteran Sam Darnold probably gets the first look, with Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall in the mix as well.

Both Mullens and Hall played in-game action for the Vikings last season, but for 2024, it looks like Darnold and McCarthy will be the biggest factors.

New England Patriots: Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, Bailey Zappe, Joe Milton III

Much like the Vikings, the Patriots drafted a first-round quarterback but have a veteran newcomer in the fold as a safety valve. Many anticipate Jacoby Brissett to be the first guy under center, but when will Drake Maye get the nod?

Since Tom Brady’s departure, the Patriots have been desperately trying to find the next guy. With their selection of Maye at No. 3 overall this year, they hope they finally solved that problem.

Rounding out the group is Bailey Zappe, who has seen some action over the last two seasons, and intriguing big-armed rookie, Joe Milton III.

New Orleans Saints: Derek Carr, Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, Taysom Hill

Derek Carr is steady. He may not be viewed as a top-tier guy, but you seemingly know what you’re going to get from a Carr-led team. The Saints are hoping to elevate their game in 2024, but in the meantime, they should be competitive and scrappy.

Year 2 QB Jake Haener figures to be QB2 at least early, while rookie Spencer Rattler has some interesting traits to be excited about. Taysom Hill is also in the room, but he’s a Swiss Army Knife player.

New York Giants: Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, Nathan Rourke

Daniel Jones is one year removed from a brand new contract and fresh off of a torn ACL that forced him to miss much of last season. This sets up an interesting dynamic because there are financial reasons to keep Jones in the fold, but the Giants may also be ready to move on.

While they didn’t draft anyone this year to do that, there was enough discussion about it to make it a reality. What Jones and the Giants will look like in 2024 is a true mystery, with some having their apprehensions about the team.

The group as a whole includes Drew Lock following his stint with the Seahawks, internet sensation Tommy DeVito, and newcomer Nathan Rourke. If Jones isn’t ready to go for Week 1, Lock and DeVito figure to battle it out for the first chance to be under center.

New York Jets: Aaron Rodgers, Tyrod Taylor, Jordan Travis, Andrew Peasley

The Jets had so much excitement and promise heading into the 2023 season. While that was all dashed within mere minutes of the season beginning, Aaron Rodgers and Co. look eager to run it back in 2024.

If healthy, Rodgers is still an elite-level quarterback capable of taking the Jets to the pinnacle. It’s his team, his creation, and it will be his abilities that the organization rides to whatever success it may achieve this season.

Behind him is veteran Tyrod Taylor, who looks to comfortably be the QB2, while the group is rounded out by rookie Jordan Travis, who is coming back from a gruesome leg injury he suffered while at Florida State. Lastly is Andrew Peasley, who may not factor into the mix in 2024 if Travis is healthy enough to dress but might stick around otherwise.

Philadelphia Eagles: Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett, Tanner McKee, Will Grier

Jalen Hurts is the guy in Philadelphia, and despite an end-of-season that the team wishes to forget took place, that fact isn’t changing. With Kellen Moore now the offensive coordinator in Philly, Hurts and the Eagles’ offense look to evolve and continue being the juggernaut they’ve looked like at times over the last few seasons.

Hurts is a dynamic runner and a capable passer, and this Eagles team is loaded, setting up what should be a good 2024 season. Behind him is former Steeler Kenny Pickett, who looks to be the lead man for QB2.

Following Pickett are Tanner McKee and Will Grier. McKee was in Philadelphia last year, while Grier has bounced around over the last couple of seasons.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Kyle Allen, John Rhys Plumlee

The Steelers head into 2024 with one of the more intriguing quarterback rooms in the NFL. They signed long-time veteran Russell Wilson, who was assumed to be the guy. However, they also traded for Justin Fields away from the Chicago Bears.

Fields is young and talented and has a chance to end up being the quarterback of the future in Pittsburgh. Is there a chance he could be the guy this season? It’s not out of the realm of possibilities.

San Francisco 49ers: Brock Purdy, Joshua Dobbs, Brandon Allen, Tanner Mordecai

If there’s one thing that Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers have proven, it’s that they are able to make the most of their QB situation, no matter who’s under center.

It also doesn’t hurt that Brock Purdy is perfect for the system. Following a Super Bowl appearance in just his second season, Purdy and Co. are looking to get back.

San Francisco’s QB room also has veterans Joshua Dobbs and Kyle Allen, as well as Tanner Mordecai. Dobbs figures to be the first guy off the bench. With his intelligence and experience, he may be able to keep things on track if he were ever called upon.

Seattle Seahawks: Geno Smith, Sam Howell, P.J. Walker

The Seahawks are committed to Geno Smith, and for good reason. He’s used his second chance to be an NFL starter as a springboard and is finally getting the respect he deserves.

With Lock now in New York, Seattle’s quarterback room looks a bit different. Sam Howell is the backup, and journeyman P.J. Walker rounds out the group. Howell is a gunslinger, and when given the chance, he flashed at times with the Commanders, setting up an intriguing QB2 situation for the Seahawks.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Baker Mayfield, Kyle Trask, John Wolford, Zack Annexstad

Baker Mayfield’s career arc has been a fascinating one. From no longer being wanted in Cleveland to bouncing around NFL rosters, to now being the guy in Tampa with a new deal. The Buccaneers go as Mayfield goes, and last season, that was a playoff victory.

Tampa Bay didn’t have an impressive regular season, but they’re scrappy and a tough matchup for anybody. A lot of that has to do with Mayfield and his playing style.

Tennessee Titans: Will Levis, Mason Rudolph, Malik Willis

The Titans are changing things up in 2024. Mike Vrabel is out, Brian Callahan is in, but QB Will Levis looks to remain the guy.

Tennessee added talent this offseason and continued the trend of going out with the old and in with the new, a move that saw Derrick Henry go to Baltimore.

However, this is a young, intriguing team that may catch the league by surprise some. The group also features veteran Mason Rudolph and Malik Willis, who at one point looked to be the man in Tennessee before Levis took over.

Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, Jeff Driskel, Sam Hartman

It’s not official yet, but Jayden Daniels looks to be the man for the Commanders in 2024. He’ll need to earn it in training camp, but when looking at the room, Daniels has always been viewed as the starter from Day 1.

Long-time veteran Marcus Mariota may change that plan if he plays overwhelmingly well, but he’s bounced around over the last few years and would need to truly impress the staff to dethrone Daniels at the top.
