Top storylines to watch in NFL preseason Week 3
Drew Lock vs. Geno Smith
The Seattle Seahawks are still searching for their starting quarterback for the 2022 NFL season. NFL preseason Week 3 will be the last time they will be able to evaluate their two options, Geno Smith and Drew Lock. Lock missed last week due to COVID but should see plenty of time in this matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
Will it be enough for him to secure the starting job, or has Smith done enough these past two weeks to be guaranteed the role? Both of these teams tend not to focus too heavily on the preseason, but for Seattle, this matchup has some significance. Will that lead them to improve on their 1-5 record over the past two preseasons?
Will the Steelers figure out the QB position?
Another team still trying to figure out their QB position is Pittsburgh. According to most reports, it is currently a tossup between Mason Rudolph, Mitch Trubisky, and rookie Kenny Pickett. In the final game of NFL preseason Week 3, the Steelers will take on the Hard Knock fan favorite Detroit Lions.
We will likely get to see all three QBs this week, and one might be able to do enough to cement themselves as the starter.
When does the NFL regular season begin?
The 2022 NFL season starts on Thursday, Sept. 8, as the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams host the Buffalo Bills in SoFi Stadium. The first Sunday of the NFL season concludes with the Dallas Cowboys hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a repeat of the 2021 NFL season opener.
There are a number of other interesting games on the Week 1 NFL schedule, like the Bengals hosting their division rival Pittsburgh Steelers and the Las Vegas Raiders traveling to face the Los Angeles Chargers. The week comes to an end on Monday night when the Denver Broncos face the Seahawks in Seattle.
