NFL Legend Deion Sanders Reflects on the Inception of His Coaching Career

Earlier this week, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and discussed various topics related to himself and football. Specifically, he detailed how his successful and impressive coaching career began.

Though he discussed the beginning of his career in the video, Prime Time is currently one of the most talked-about coaches in football. Since arriving in 2022, he has revolutionized the Buffaloes’ football program. He was heavily rumored to be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys before the job was ultimately given to Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

How Did Deion Sanders’ Coaching Career Begin?

Sanders revealed to Colbert that his coaching career began when he was watching a practice for his two sons, who were both playing on the same team at the time.

“I stumbled up on it. I was retired and I just wanted to be a dad, I’m sitting at home. I’m taking my seven-year-old to football practice and I wasn’t going to two different practices, so my five-year-old, we lied and said he was six so I could get him on the same team. And I’m there and I’m watching them have these kids collide. So, I get up off my lawn chair and say let me go do this,” he stated.

“Next thing you know, I’m running the whole practice. And I thought to myself, if I’m going to do this, I’m going to do it my way. So, I called some of my friends that played in the NFL with me that were retired and I said let’s start this youth football league. We had 1,200 kids tryout and the rest was history,” he explained.

While Sanders appears to be set to remain as the head coach of the Buffaloes for at least next season, his two children, Shedeur and Shilo, are both expected to be drafted to the NFL this year.

In Pro Football Network’s latest 7-round 2025 NFL Mock Draft, Shedeur was selected No. 1 overall by the Tennessee Titans while Shilo was taken No. 229 overall by the Carolina Panthers.

While there is still a long way to go before the draft takes place, Coach’s Prime recent story to Colbert adds another interesting dynamic to the Sanders family story.
