Why Broncos Fans Will Be Disappointed in 2025 NFL Free Agency

In a post on X, Allbright stated, “I get this one a lot, so I’m gonna quote it, as I’ve said for weeks…if you’re a Broncos fan and you’re hoping for a wide receiver in free agency, you’re gonna be disappointed.”

Allbright’s prediction comes at a time when the Broncos are facing significant pressure to bolster their receiving corps. Despite the team’s surprising 10-7 record and playoff appearance in 2024, there’s still a clear need to provide more weapons for Bo Nix. A few factors exacerbate that need.

The team’s top wideout, Courtland Sutton, is scheduled to become a free agent in 2026. Denver’s second best receiver in 2024 was running back Javonte Williams, who’s an unrestricted free agent and ranks 87th on PFSN’s Top 100 Free Agents list. All-Pro returner Marvin Mims can provide a spark but hasn’t flourished as WR2. Denver could re-sign Lil’Jordan Humphrey for depth with little hit to the cap, but his productivity is limited.

The Broncos’ passing game heavily relies on Sutton and the significant gap between Sutton’s production and other receivers on the roster highlights the demand for more balance in the passing game.

How the Broncos’ Salary Cap Space Affects Signing a Top Free Agent Wide Receiver

Denver has the league-average in salary cap space for 2025 with more than $37 million available. PFSN’s Ben Rolfe predicted the team would use a chunk of that cache to sign a veteran pass-catching tight end.

As for free agent wide receivers, Rolfe had the No. 4 ranked free agent Chris Godwin going to the Houston Texans (despite having approximately $500,000 in available space), and Keenan Allen signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. The consensus has the Cincinnati Bengals placing the franchise tag on top free agent Tee Higgins while they try to figure out a long-term deal.

In the 2026 offseason, the Broncos will have the eight most space in the NFL, so re-signing Sutton, whose market value is currently $22.9 million annually, appears within reach. Adding insurance for Sutton, or even support, would be huge for Nix but also for making Sutton’s decision to extend his tenure an easier one.

Top Wide Receiver Options in the 2025 NFL Draft

The upcoming draft could provide opportunities to add young, more affordable, talent to Denver’s arsenal.

PFSN’s Owain Jones predicted the Broncos would take Missouri Tigers receiver Luther Burden III, noting that, “Sean Payton has spoken about the necessity of getting elusive game-changing weapons on the Denver Broncos offense, and Luther Burden III is just that.”

In his 7-round mock draft, PFSN’s Joe DeLeone felt Denver could add a couple targets, trading up to select Michigan Wolverines pass-catcher Colston Loveland and taking Oregon Ducks speedster Tez Johnson.

Finding ways to aid Bo Nix’s growth and further enhance the passing game will be crucial for a team that bucked expectations in 2024 and appears poised to disrupt the power dynamic in the AFC West.
