Matthew Stafford’s name was dominating the trade discussions this offseason, with reports linking him to multiple teams like the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders all at the same time. However, the veteran quarterback ultimately decided to stay in Los Angeles with a restructured contract.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Stafford’s choice came down to two key factors: his love for Southern California and his trust in Rams head coach Sean McVay.

The Rams’ Calculated Move Helps Re-Sign Matthew Stafford
Speculation filled the offseason discussion about Stafford’s future, and the Rams played their hand carefully. Instead of outright shutting down trade discussions, they allowed Stafford and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, to explore the market. This approach gave both parties a clearer picture of Stafford’s value and reinforced that staying in Los Angeles was the best path forward.
“In the end, the Matthew Stafford saga boiled down to something remarkably simple for the 37-year-old Los Angeles Rams quarterback: Stafford likes living in Southern California and he wants to play for Sean McVay, his coach for the past four years,” Breer wrote.
Other teams, like the Giants and Raiders, reportedly expressed interest in pushing for a transition; no situation seemed more appealing for Stafford than remaining in McVay’s system. He had just $4 million guaranteed for the next two years, and the Rams are likely upping that number.
Los Angeles was confident Stafford would return, but Breer noted, “Things went a little sideways the past couple of weeks and over the past year.” Ultimately, Stafford’s ability to test his market only reaffirmed that staying with the Rams was the best decision.
What’s Next for the QB Market?
Stafford’s commitment to the Rams now forces other QB-needy teams to shift their focus to the existing options or wait until the NFL Draft. The Giants explored trading for Stafford as a potential upgrade, and with that option off the table, they may pivot to Aaron Rodgers as the New York Jets plan to move on. Meanwhile, the Raiders remain in the market for a long-term solution, with speculation around Sam Darnold as a potential fit.
According to Breer, the Rams planned to meet with Stafford at 6:30 a.m. PT to finalize their plans, and by lunchtime at the NFL Scouting Combine, the news had become public. “Which, obviously (at least now), is what everyone here wanted for a conclusion,” Breer noted.

Now that Stafford has finally decided to stay in L.A., saving him the hassle of relocating and restarting, the quarterback carousel continues. The Rams’ patience paid off, securing stability under center as other teams continue to find their next leaders.
