NFL Insider Puts Deion Sanders on Shortlist for Dallas Cowboys Job

After their contract with Mike McCarthy ended, the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with their former head coach and are now scouring the market for a new one.

With the NFL in its playoff stage, early offseason deals are at an all-time high, and owner Jerry Jones is desperately seeking his new sideline leader who can bring the charisma he so desires. On the top of his list is former Cowboys player and current Colorado coach Deion Sanders.

Adam Schefter Has Deion Sanders on Cowboys’ Potential Coach Shortlist

On Jan. 19, insider Adam Schefter talked about Dallas’ shortlist for potential candidates that could fill the vacancy, which, of course, included Coach Prime.

Schefter: “They are in their own little category because it doesn’t seem like they’re in on other candidates. Now, they could always call him at our level and see if they do. But to date, they’ve spoken with Kellen Moore. They spoke with Robert Saleh. Leslie Frazier is coming up tomorrow. Jerry Jones and Deion Sanders have spoken.

“Everybody’s waiting to hear about Jason Witten and Anthony Lynn has a history of this organization and is running the run game in Washington that has been so effective. So, the Dallas Cowboys, I think, are moving at their own pace in their own universe doing what they do, and we wait to see where that brings them. But it feels like the other five teams are in on the Lions coordinators, and the Cowboys are operating in their own universe.”

Though a formal interview hasn’t been scheduled, Jones and Sanders have been maintaining a conversation about the opening, even when the job wasn’t open in the Fall. Talking about the recent talk he had with the owner, Coach Prime said on Jan. 13:

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up and process it and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body, and the community.”

Sanders has constantly said that he wants to stay with the Colorado ever since his name came up in conversations for the Dallas seat. He is with the Buffaloes on a five-year, $29.5 million contract.
