The Pittsburgh Steelers have once again found themselves in a familiar position as they enter the offseason: facing a crucial decision at quarterback. This has been a key question for the team ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired, and despite attempts to answer it in 2024, Pittsburgh remains without a long-term solution.
The Steelers tried two different quarterbacks last season, trading for Justin Fields and signing for 2014 Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson. However, neither move resulted in the elusive playoff win they’ve been searching for since 2017.
As both quarterbacks near free agency, the Steelers are at a crucial crossroads, and a recent report from The Athletic hints that there might be some major moves coming this offseason.

Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Dilemma
After giving both Fields and Wilson a chance, the Steelers have little to show for it. Fields was traded to Pittsburgh in hopes of revitalizing his career, but his performance didn’t lead to the breakout the Steelers had hoped for. Meanwhile, Wilson’s arrival was supposed to bring stability and veteran leadership, but inconsistent play left Pittsburgh still searching for a reliable quarterback who could maximize its offensive potential.
“Expect Pittsburgh to explore every option, including potential free agents like Rodgers or Kirk Cousins,” predicted The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
As both Fields and Wilson enter free agency, the Steelers face a pivotal decision this offseason. The Athletic’s report also stated that Steelers owner Art Rooney II has expressed interest in bringing back either Fields or Wilson, but that decision is far from being clear.
Could Aaron Rodgers or Kirk Cousins Be the Answer?
While the Steelers have the option to re-sign Fields or Wilson, exploring other veteran quarterbacks could be a game-changer for the franchise.
Aaron Rodgers, if he becomes available, would bring an elite level of experience and playmaking ability to Pittsburgh. His deep knowledge of the game and ability to perform under pressure could immediately elevate the Steelers’ offense, a unit that finished 2024 with a PFSN Offense+ rating of 67.5 (D+).
Kirk Cousins, on the other hand, often overlooked despite his consistent production, could provide a more stable alternative. His calm demeanor and strong arm could help make up for the inconsistencies the Steelers saw in their current quarterbacks while also providing a steady presence in crucial moments.
With a defense that showed promise, earning a PFSN Defense+ rating of 78.7 (C+), a quarterback like Cousins could balance out Pittsburgh’s roster and make them true contenders.
Both players were less than impressive in PFSN’s QB+ metric. Rodgers finished with a 72.2 C- grade and No. 21 overall — behind the Las Vegas Raiders’ Aidan O’Connell and rookies Bo Nix and Drake Maye. Cousins, meanwhile, finished No. 24 overall with a 71.2 grade (C-).
If the Steelers do decide to move on from Fields or Wilson, these veteran options could be a way to ensure they remain competitive while they search for their future long-term quarterback.
After finishing the last two seasons at 10-7, the Steelers know that playoff success is their next goal, and the main thing they’ve been missing is consistency at quarterback — someone who can consistently lead the offense, maintain momentum, and make plays when it counts.
