NFL insider Albert Breer appeared on “The Rich Eisen Show” and shared a concerning update on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster situation ahead of free agency. With rumors swirling about wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s future, negotiations with quarterback Brock Purdy don’t appear to be any easier.
According to Breer, the 49ers would prefer to finalize a deal quickly, but there remains a significant gap between the figures both sides are proposing.

49ers and Brock Purdy Not Close to New Deal
Having cemented himself as the 49ers’ starting quarterback over the past three seasons, Purdy is well within his rights to expect a new contract. The fact that he has been earning less than most backups during his first three years is surprising, and the time has come for him to cash in on his success.
But according to Breer, the two sides are far apart on a deal that would put Purdy among the NFL’s top 15 highest-paid quarterbacks. San Francisco would have been wise to finalize his contract earlier — before Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen signed extensions. Instead, the team now faces a lengthy negotiation with Purdy’s representatives.
During his conversation with Eisen, Breer explained his understanding of the situation.
“I think the 49ers would like to keep it in the fours, and Purdy’s camp would have it in the fives,” chuckled Breer, amused by the clear gap in valuation.
“It’s gonna take some time to get through this. What you hope is, with your quarterback, that they aren’t going through what they went through the last three offseasons in a row. Where it was Deebo [Samuel] in ’22, it was Nick Bosa in ’23, and it was Brandon Aiyuk last year, where those things lasted all the way, like, deep into training camp.”
It’s true that San Francisco has dealt with this before, with a roster packed with elite talent. Breer remains confident a deal will get done but didn’t rule out any possibilities.
“I think the Niners would tell you, both publicly [and] privately, that Brock Purdy is their guy. I don’t think they would want to go into a contract year with him, but I don’t think anything is off the table right now. They’ve obviously got the franchise tag, if they have to use it, in 2026.”

The fact that the 49ers didn’t win a Super Bowl during Purdy’s rookie contract, which was arguably the biggest bargain in recent years, is unfortunate. But Purdy has earned his payday, and after San Francisco benefited from his low salary, the team owes it to him to work out a deal.
With Deebo Samuel Sr. gone, Aiyuk possibly on the trade block, George Kittle aging, and Christian McCaffrey’s health a question mark, Purdy is the only long-term certainty the 49ers have beyond 2025. The team will naturally try to secure the best deal possible, but delaying an inevitable contract extension has rarely benefited a franchise financially in the long run.
