32. TBD – Houston Texans
It’s hard for a team to have a bad general manager when no one is sitting in the chair. Brian Gaine’s recent firing comes with mixed reviews. He found three potential franchise pieces in 2018 before watching the team self-implode this offseason. Houston has an opening, making them dead last in our rankings.
31. Joe Douglas – New York Jets
Joe Douglas is a fine executive who has been a hot name over the past two seasons. It’s hard to judge a GM when they haven’t done anything. Let’s check back in next year on the Jets’ newest member and see how he turns out.
30. Jason Licht – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I bet a ton of you were thinking Dave Gettleman was going to be ranked as the worst GM. Wrong! There’s one whose seat is hotter than the suicide hot wings in New York. Just trust me, they’re hot and don’t try the challenge.
Since taking over, Licht’s Buccaneers still have yet to make the playoffs. That’s all in the past though since the long-time GM’s tenure should be based off this season. With the hiring of Bruce Arians, the Bucs could turn over a new leaf and end up being a competitive unit for years to come.
The real story is that Arians was brought in to fix Jameis Winston. Struggling the past two seasons, the quarterback whisperer will need to see improvement from the former Heisman Trophy Winner if he expects to stay under center much longer. If Winston struggles again, both he and Licht could be looking for work come Black Monday.
29. Dave Gettleman – New York Giants
Dave Gettleman let Landon Collins walk to division rival Washington and traded Odell Beckham Jr. for a first-round pick, a third-round pick, and Jabrill Peppers. Peppers isn’t atrocious, but he’s not Collins by any means. The first-round pick acquired from the Beckham trade turned into Dexter Lawrence when high-regarded pass rushers were still available.
Let’s take a walk on the deep end, shall we? Give some credit to Gettleman for mustering up the courage to shock the world on draft night with Daniel Jones. Is it likely going to backfire? Yeah. Should Giants fans have their doubts? Undeniably. If Gettleman proved anything with the sixth selection, it is that you should take the guy you genuinely believe in. He did just that – so salute to you, bossman.
Who knows, maybe Dave is from the future and has a diabolical plan to make Jones the MVP in 2020? Or perhaps he’s not cut out to be a GM and should let others make the decisions? We’ll check back in two years on this one; you know if he’s still in the seat and not on a crazy planet.
