With the 2022 preseason schedule officially in full swing, are there any NFL games being played today, Friday, Aug. 19? As Week 2 of the NFL preseason kicks into gear, what does today’s slate have in store?
NFL games on TV today | Friday, Aug. 19
There are three games being played on Friday, and two of them can be found on TV nationally on NFL Network.
Carolina Panthers at New England Patriots
Time: 7 p.m. ET
TV channel: NFL Network
Live Stream: Vidgo, fuboTV, NFL+
Carolina’s quarterback battle continues into the team’s second preseason contest, and though Baker Mayfield took the start in the team’s victory over the Washington Commanders last week, Sam Darnold and rookie Matt Corral are still nipping at his heels. Corral seriously struggled against the Commanders, completing just 1 of 9 passes. Meanwhile, Darnold only had three pass attempts, but he did connect on two of them for 16 yards and a touchdown.
It’s likely that head coach Matt Rhule, who was complimentary of his two veterans following last week’s game, uses the team’s contest against the Patriots as one of the final barometers to make a decision as to the team’s starter as we near Week 1.
On New England’s side of the ball, several of the team’s key position battles on offense, including the wide receiver rotation and running back committee pecking order, are still up for grabs. Rookie second-round pick Tyquan Thornton has impressed thus far in training camp, and he’ll get another chance against Carolina to stake a claim for regular-season snaps alongside Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, and the team’s other veteran wideouts.
New Orleans Saints at Green Bay Packers
Time: 8 p.m. ET
TV channel: Local FOX/NBC
Live Stream: fuboTV, NFL+
Two longtime NFC heavyweights go head-to-head in a matchup that should provide intriguing insight for fantasy football fans hoping for more glimpses of rookie skill-position players looking to force their way into regular-season playing time.
Green Bay Packers fourth-round wideout Romeo Doubs has been the talk of training camp and performed well in his preseason debut last week. Fellow first-year pass catcher Christian Watson — drafted two rounds before his counterpart — has been recently activated off of the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from offseason knee surgery.
New Orleans Saints undrafted rookie running back Abram Smith has impressed the Saints coaching staff this offseason, but he’s battling an established depth chart in front of him. Alvin Kamara is once again likely to star as one of New Orleans’ primary offensive weapons, and veteran Mark Ingram is still in town to play the role of Robin to Kamara’s Batman. The rookie had a couple of strong runs last week against the Houston Texans, but a fumble near the goal line marred his outing. He’ll look to bounce back this week.
Houston Texans at Los Angeles Rams
Time: 10 p.m. ET
TV channel: NFL Network
Live Stream: Paramount+, Vidgo, fuboTV, NFL+
In this matchup, we get another look at the rebuilding Houston Texans and second-year signal-caller Davis Mills’ expedition to prove that he can be the team’s starting quarterback of the future. Mills’ challenge this week: to show out against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
In last week’s Battle of LA preseason matchup, the Rams took out the Chargers by a score of 29-22 on the arm (and legs) of third-year passer Bryce Perkins. Perkins should get more extended playing time this week as starter Matthew Stafford continues his conservative training camp regimen due to an elbow ailment that the team is attempting to manage heading into the regular season.
