These two teams have been heading in opposite directions since the season started. After getting completely blown out at home to open the season by the Buffalo Bills, the Super Bowl-defending Los Angeles Rams have won two straight. This includes a nice 20-12 win over their NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals last week. Although their offense is still trying to figure some things out, the team’s elite defense has come into form.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers came into the year ready to move in a new direction under quarterback Trey Lance. Unfortunately, Lance suffered a devastating ankle injury, and is now out for the rest of the season. Jimmy Garoppolo, the subject of intense trade discussions all offseason, has now stepped back in to lead the team. Although he looked good in relief of Lance after the injury, he was completely shut down last week by a very questionable Denver Broncos team.
The trend that most continue to point to in this NFL game today is the dominance the 49ers have shown over the Rams since 2018. Over the past four years, San Francisco has gone 6-1 against Los Angeles. However, it is important to note that four of those last six were decided by three points or fewer. So, these games have been anything but blowouts. Nonetheless, Jimmy G and Kyle Shanahan do seem to have the Rams’ number. Will that continue tonight?
[bet-promo id=”160004″ ]I don’t believe it will. With the current spread favoring the home team by only a point and a half, I will gladly take the underdog in this one. Statistically, the Rams have been the better team in most metrics. They are averaging 20.3 points per game compared to the 49ers’ 15.7. They are also throwing the ball better, averaging 234 yards per game compared to San Francisco’s 172.7.
Is this a slam dunk play for the Rams? Not even close. There are a ton of trends that point in the home team’s favor that are cause for concern. San Francisco is 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games going back to the end of last season with Jimmy G under center. Additionally, they are 5-0 ATS at home. That alone is enough to scare me away from making a significant bet on the away team. Combine those stats with the fact that the 49ers have the third-best defense in the league right now, and this becomes more of a lean than a full-on bet.
However, it is the only NFL game today, so obviously, we need to have some action on it.
