Kirk Cousins’ pending free agency is one of the bigger offseason stories in the NFL.
The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback has thrown for close to 40,000 yards in his 12-year career with the Washington Commanders and Minnesota Vikings. While the Vikings will have an interest in bringing back the Michigan State product, there will be plenty of suitors on the open market interested in signing Cousins.
But according to the top NFL reporter, it’s not just the Vikings that could potentially offer a reunion of sorts for the long-time pocket passer.
Adam Schefter Details Interested Teams for Cousins’ Services
On the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN Senior NFL Reporter Adam Schefter made it clear that the two teams most interested in paying Cousins in free agency are the Vikings and Atlanta Falcons (both teams went 7-10 last season).
The Falcons have plenty of offensive weapons at their disposal, a new coaching staff, and a strong defense to pair with a potential starting QB. The Vikings, meanwhile, have trust in their young coaching staff but have plenty of needs along the offensive line and defense.
Yet, there’s a third team that could also be interested in Cousins:
The team that originally drafted him… the Washington Commanders.
“Maybe Washington jumps in, but the two primary suitors, I would expect to be in Minnesota and Atlanta,” Schefter said to McAfee.
Schefter pointed out that the team that ends up losing on the Cousins’ sweepstakes could trade up to take one of the top rookie QBs in the 2024 NFL Draft or look elsewhere in free agency for players like Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield or the recently released Russell Wilson.
Washington owns the second overall pick in the draft and expects to have the option of drafting either North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels. Bringing Cousins back to the nation’s capital would allow the organization to be patient with one of their top rookies.
The former fourth-round pick went 26-30-1 during his six seasons with the franchise while throwing 99 touchdowns to 55 picks. Cousins has since taken off since signing with Minnesota, throwing over 170 touchdowns and the same amount of picks through the same number of years.
