NFL Free Agency: Ex-Bears WR Allen Robinson signs with the Rams

Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Allen Robinson has escaped the Chicago Bears for a new contract and fresh start in free agency.

Former Pro Bowl wideout Allen Robinson has escaped his up-and-down tenure with the Chicago Bears. The veteran playmaker has agreed to join the Los Angeles Rams in free agency, signing a three-year deal worth $46.5 million, according to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson.

Robinson, 28, has played for two different franchises and understands what it takes to be a leader at the wide receiver position. He will likely mentor the young playmakers with the Rams’ offense.

    Getting to know Robinson

Robinson entered the league as a 2014 second-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Penn State alum got off to a rough start to his career, as he was limited to just 10 games (8 starts) after suffering a stress fracture in his foot. Still, he showed significant upside, collecting 48 catches for 548 yards and 2 touchdowns in limited action.

Robinson returned to the lineup in 2015 and had a career year, catching 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was voted to his first and only Pro Bowl due to that success.

During his third season in Jacksonville, the offense took a huge step back, and so did Robinson’s stat line. He finished with just 883 yards and 6 touchdowns off 78 receptions. In 2017, Robinson suffered a torn ACL in the Jaguars’ Week 1 win over the Houston Texans and missed the rest of the season.

    Career with the Bears

Despite coming off knee surgery, teams heavily pursued Robinson during free agency in 2018. He ended up signing a three-year, $42 million deal with the Chicago Bears. Robinson helped Chicago win the NFC North during his first season with the Bears. He caught 55 passes for 754 yards and 4 touchdowns in Year 1 in the Windy City.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound receiver put up big numbers in 2019, collecting 98 receptions for 1,147 yards and 7 touchdowns. He closed out his first deal with the Bears by putting up 1,250 yards and 6 touchdowns on a career-high 102 catches in 2020.

The Bears franchise-tagged Robinson last offseason. He played on the tag and suffered through an injury-riddled campaign. The Bears limited Robinson’s role and effectiveness as they moved away from him on offense. He finished 2021 with just 38 catches for 410 yards and a touchdown.

During his career, Robinson has caught 495 passes for 6,409 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Who is left on the market?

Robinson was Pro Football Network Lead NFL Analyst Dalton Miller’s 22nd overall free agent and third-ranked wide receiver on the open market.

With Robinson off the market, wide receivers like Will Fuller of the Miami Dolphins, JuJu Smith-Schuster of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Julio Jones of the Tennessee Titans should cash in during the second wave of free agency.
