Deebo Samuel is coming off the worst season of his career, and the San Francisco 49ers missed the playoffs. It was a disappointing season for the player and his team after coming up just short in Super Bowl 58 in overtime.
Ahead of this year’s Super Bowl matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, Samuel was seen wearing an A.J. Brown jersey. Since the 49ers and the Eagles have a big rivalry, the fans didn’t like the 29-year-old receiver wearing an opposing team’s jersey.
Deebo Samuel Faced Criticism From Fans
Fans have criticized Samuel extensively on social media throughout the past NFL season for his performances.
They now called him out for wearing an Eagles jersey, especially at a time when his team is coming off a disastrous season and his future with the 49ers is uncertain.

Samuel has constantly taken shots at the Eagles since the 49ers lost in the NFC Championship Game against them two years ago. Since San Francisco played the majority of the game without a quarterback due to injuries to Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson, all their players and fans had a valid reason to use as an excuse for that loss.
The following season, the 49ers recorded a 42-19 win against the Eagles, and Samuel scored three touchdowns to avenge the loss in the NFC Championship Game.
In the last three seasons, either the 49ers or the Eagles have played in the NFC Championship Game, so they are arguably the two most successful teams in their conference. As a result, Brown and Samuel have a good relationship with each other and friends off the field. However, since everyone believes a real rivalry exists between Philadelphia and San Francisco, the 49ers’ star wearing an Eagles jersey wasn’t a good look.
Samuel has also lost two Super Bowls against the Chiefs, so him rooting against Kansas City makes sense, but the fans would have liked it better if he had been in normal clothes.
The wide receiver’s performance this past season didn’t do him any favor, as he averaged career-low numbers in these categories:
- Receiving yards per game — 44.7
- Receptions per game — 3.4
- Rushing yards per attempt — 3.2
- Scrimmage yards per touch — 8.7
Samuel still has one year left on the three-year, $71.55 million contract extension he signed in 2022. However, the franchise has to pay Brock Purdy and, due to it, might have to make tough decisions with other key players.
