Bill Belichick helped build the New England Patriots during his time as the head coach, winning six Super Bowls. This leads to the interesting point he made during his chat on the “Let’s Go!” podcast with Jim Gray on Jan. 29.
Fans React to Bill Belichick’s Idea of Renaming the Lombardi Trophy
Even with all his achievements, Belichick downplayed the role of ‘the coach’ in winning big games, giving a major part of the credit to the players. He said athletes on the field really win championships.
“You can’t win games without good players,” Belichick explained. “I don’t care who the coach is. It’s impossible. You can’t win without good players.”
While he acknowledged his own part in the Patriots’ wins, he further noted that the team wouldn’t have won without cornerstone players like Tom Brady, Willie McGinest, and Tedy Bruschi.
So, when the conversation turned to the NFL’s championship trophy, named after former coach Vince Lombardi, Belichick joked that maybe it should be named after Brady instead: “Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy. He won seven of them.”

Many NFL fans did not agree with Belichick’s statement as they flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with their comments.
“That’d be horrible,” one fan wrote.

One mentioned another NFL great, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is on his way to a potential three-peat, the first in the Super Bowl Era.
“Then they’d have to rename it to the Mahomes trophy at some point,” the fan commented.
Some were all about Belichick’s idea to rename the Lombardi Trophy.
“This is actually a great idea. The player with the most Super Bowl wins gets the trophy named after them.” A fan chimed in.

“The Goat saying what I been saying on this app since I got this account 18 months ago.
Players are the meal; coaches are the condiments. It’s that simple. You can win with mediocre coaching and good players. You can’t win with mediocre players but good coaching.” A fan echoed Belichick’s sentiments.
Brady holds the record for the most Super Bowl wins, with seven in total, six of which he has with the Patriots. It’s also worth mentioning that Lombardi took the Green Bay Packers to seven championships. He won five NFL titles from 1961 to 1967 before taking home the first two Super Bowl wins after the championship’s inception in 1967.
