Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his five-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys. There have been various speculations about him leaving the team after this season, but Micah Parsons recently expressed his desire for McCarthy to return in 2025.
Troy Aikman recently spoke on “105.3 The Fan” and said that he expects the current Cowboys head coach to continue beyond this season. The fans opposed this idea as they wanted a fresh start after five years of disappointment with McCarthy.
Cowboys Fans Do Not Want Mike McCarthy Back in 2025
Aikman thinks that, apart from Bill Belichick, there is no other candidate available in next year’s coaching cycle with a better résumé than McCarthy. He also mentioned that since the players love him, it will be better for the Cowboys to stick with the current head coach.
“I like the way this team is playing right now, even without their franchise quarterback,” Aikman said per Jon Machota. “I sense that it’s a team that really believes in Mike McCarthy. I feel the locker room wants him back. I think he’s a really good football coach. I believe Jerry Jones thinks he’s a really good football coach, too. … As we stand and talk right now, I expect Mike McCarthy to be back in 2025.”
Here’s how the Cowboys’ fans on social media showed their resentment towards Aikman’s proposal:

“This is insane. How can you watch this team and think it’s well coached? I just don’t understand,” said one fan.
Another fan added, “1 playoff win in 5 years. Is that the new standard in Dallas? In 2020 when he was hired, everyone would have been okay with this? Stop with the excuses!!”
🖕🏾that resume. How about update it since it's been 15 years since you won it all? Just a thought https://t.co/OKgcgSWySg

“Yeah, I’m sure there are no other HIGH-quality young NFL assistants or college coaches. All the other coaches out there must be idiots. this has to be the dumbest take ever,” wrote a fan.
“These people need to stop. McCarthy brings zero schematic advantages and mismanages the clock,” said another fan.
Jerry Jones heard Ben Johnson wants $ and the old man to stay away from football operations. Therefore, decided mediocrity is fine as long as the coach takes orders, so McCarthy it is.
If this is the case, it would be wise to take a big swing on an offensive coordinator. https://t.co/RP7XNsQBra— Curtis Hirsch (@curtisharsch) December 10, 2024
Heading into the Week 14 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, McCarthy had a record of 47-32 as the Cowboys head coach. He has had immense success in the regular season but has only won one playoff game during his tenure.
Since Dak Prescott is out for the season, Dallas is unlikely to make the playoffs. That means that McCarthy will have just one playoff win to his name in five years as the Cowboys’ head coach, and it certainly doesn’t warrant a contract extension.
The fans made valid points, as the story for the NFC East team is the same every year. Even if the Cowboys do not get Bill Belichick, a coach like Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson, or Aaron Glenn could propel the team to the next level.
The players have shown their love for McCarthy recently, but it might be possible that they have become too comfortable with the current head coach, and a change of personnel might be required for them to take the next step.
Dallas Trailed the Bengals 17-10 at Halftime on MNF
The Cowboys were 5-7 before their game against the Bengals on Monday Night Football in Week 14. They are coming off back-to-back wins against the Washington Commanders and the New York Giants, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Dallas went against a Cincinnati team, who, like them, has had a fairly unsuccessful season. The Cowboys trailed by 17-10 at halftime to the Bengals but tied the game early in the third quarter through a touchdown from Brandin Cooks.
Both McCarthy and Zac Taylor are under pressure and could lose their job after this season. Games like these might not mean much this season, but they are crucial for the head coaches’ futures.
Bengals and Cowboys fans have both expressed a desire for their respective teams to make a coaching change after this season. However, the front offices of both teams have so far refrained from showing the same desire to get a new head coach.
