With Mike McCarthy’s chances of signing an extension with the Dallas Cowboys looking slim to none, especially given the team’s 3-6 record this season and the possibility of its first campaign with double-digit losses since 2020, speculation abounds that McCarthy’s time in Dallas might be coming to an end. Meanwhile, the talk of Deion Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes coach, taking his seat is gaining steam.
However, not everyone views the Deion-to-Dallas connection as a sure-fire bet — or his best match.
Elle Duncan Halts Breaks on Deion Sanders and the Cowboys
Keeping in mind the rumors, during Friday’s episode of “First Take,” the panel discussed whether Sanders would be a good fit to coach the Cowboys. Elle Duncan of ESPN disagreed:
“Why on God’s Earth would Deion Sanders wanna go to the Cowboys?”
She further pointed out that if Coach Prime were to bring his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders (a projected top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft), along with him, it could cause complications with Dak Prescott, who is already a starting QB. His established position might make it hard for Sanders to find a spot for his son on the roster.
She further suggested that Sanders might be a better fit with a team that has more quarterback issues and could be in line for a top pick, like the Jacksonville Jaguars or the New York Giants.

Fan comments came flooding in, many of which were not happy with Duncan’s take.
“Terrible take,” a fan said.
“This woman has zero knowledge on anything!! An awful watch!!” Another user commented.
“I don’t even wanna hear now we gotta trade Dak, Hell nah y’all keeping him,” a user chimed in.
Duncan also mentioned that QB Trevor Lawrence’s days in Jacksonville, Fla., were numbered, which is why she believed the Sanders duo would be a better fit there. Some fans did not take kindly to the comment:
“To say Trevor’s days in Jax are numbered is ignorant and dumb,” a user said.
“Things that will never happen for a thousand dollars please. How does she have a job in this industry,” a user commented.
However, a few fans seemed to agree with her take:
“I agree with @elleduncanESPN. Jacksonville is a better fit for Deion than Dallas for all the reasons she outlined,” a fan said.
Sanders Addressed the Speculation About a Potential NFL Move
Sanders, who spent five years in Dallas as a player and won a Super Bowl with the team in 1995, is leading the Colorado Buffaloes (7-2) to a potential path to the College Football Playoff. In turn, the rumor mill has only grown.
However, on FS1’s “Speak” on Tuesday, he said:
“Oh Lord, don’t start that. … I love it where I am. I love it where I am.”

Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated also mentioned that he’s unaware of any serious discussions with the league about Sanders joining hands with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. To help put rumors to rest, it’s worth mentioning that Dallas’ coaching search won’t begin until the offseason, since Jones has already confirmed that he won’t let go of McCarthy during the ongoing campaign.
