Chiefs Cut Clyde Edwards-Helaire as They Keep Their Eyes on the Prize

The Chiefs just hit fans with a “Wait, what?” moment, dropping former first-round running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. NFL insider Ari Meirov broke the news on X (formerly known as Twitter), and social media reacted.

Edwards-Helaire, once the crown jewel of LSU’s 2019 juggernaut squad, came to the Chiefs in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. But instead of dominating, his four-year run felt more like a shaky drive downfield with 1,845 rushing yards, 12 TDs, and flashes that rarely turned into fire.

Fans quickly took to X to let it all out.

One summed up the vibe with, “Whoa, didn’t see that coming.”

Another added a jab: “Dude got drafted just because he was on that 2019 LSU squad.” Tough crowd for the former first-rounder who totaled 1,867 and 17 TDs on a national championship-winning team.

Some couldn’t help but point out the Chiefs’ unstoppable machine: “Crazy how such a wasted pick has done nothing to slow down the Chiefs dynasty.”

Cold, but true — Isiah Pacheco’s been holding it down, and Patrick Mahomes is still Mahomes.

Not everyone was piling on, though. One fan showed love: “Unfortunately gotta make room for [Hollywood] Brown coming back to the 53 and I hate it for Clyde, I was hoping he could get past it and come back healthy, happy and productive. I wish him nothing but success in the future!”

At the end of the day, this move proves one thing: the Chiefs are all about winning now. And Edwards-Helaire — he’s got a shot at a fresh start somewhere where he can finally turn potential into production.

The Chiefs walked away with a road win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in Week 15, but Mahomes’ ankle took the real beating. The franchise QB got crunched late in the fourth quarter, leaving fans holding their breath and backup Carson Wentz holding the clipboard no more.

On a desperate fourth-down play, Mahomes tried to do what Mahomes does best: make something out of nothing. Jumping mid-throw, he unleashed a pass, but Browns lineman Dalvin Tomlinson had other plans.

Tomlinson wrapped up Mahomes’ ankle on the way down, and just for good measure, Mike Hall Jr. bulldozed him up top, bending him backward like a human pretzel.

The result? A nasty hit and a very obvious limp as Mahomes hobbled off, barely touching his right ankle to the turf.

Head coach Andy Reid eased some fears postgame, though: “His right ankle has been hurt. It’s not broken, but it’s sore.” Translation: Mahomes will live to see another play, but his ankle just got added to the Chiefs’ watchlist.

For now, the Chiefs fans can only hope the MVP-caliber QB rehabs fast — because everything in Kansas City runs through No. 15.
