NFL Draft Rumors: Will the Giants Consider a QB at the Top of the Draft?

    Published on

The Giants have a crucial decision to make at No. 6 overall and one insider revealed their interest level at the quarterback position.

The New York Giants are anticipated to upgrade the offensive help come April once the NFL Draft arrives.

Many draft experts believe protecting the quarterback is first priority after watching the Giants’ offensive line surrender an NFL-high 85 sacks. However, a new Monday report revealed that the franchise could pivot to getting a QB right away — which could signal the end of the Daniel Jones era.

Are New York Giants Considering a QB at Sixth Overall?

ESPN Giants insider Jordan Raanan outlined what could potentially happen when the team picks No. 6 on Night 1 of the draft.

Long story short — Raanan isn’t ruling out New York swooping up a quarterback to start their draft. One primary reason is Jones’ health concerns.

“You have Daniel Jones now — three years, three injuries,” Raanan began. “Two pretty serious neck injuries, and then he tore his ACL this year. He’s still rehabbing from that.”

Jones’ ailments have put general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll in a predicament involving what direction to go at QB.

“So when you’re looking at it from the Giants perspective, are general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll willing to risk their professional careers with a quarterback with that injury history?” Raanan asked.

That’s where the sixth overall selection the Giants hold comes into play.

“The Giants have the No. 6 overall pick and two second-rounders — they picked up one in the Leonard Williams midseason last year. They can use those to potentially look at a quarterback,” Raanan said.

Jones has emerged as the subject of trade rumors. Despite guiding the Giants to the 2022 playoffs and being a former sixth overall selection from the 2019 NFL Draft, many across the league believe he’ll be dealt away this offseason.

Again by Raanan’s words, the Giants would consider a passer “if the situation presents itself correctly.” And that’s based on multiple conversations he’s had with Giants representatives.

New York, though, would want these traits behind center, per Raanan.

“I know from speaking to people within the Giants organization, this is an organization that thinks very much that not every quarterback is made for the New York market. You have to have certain characteristics and a certain personality to be able to handle the pressure when it comes to playing QB in New York,” Raanan said.

Already, 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels has been mentioned as a Giants possibility by NFL Draft expert for the NFL Network Daniel Jeremiah. However, Jeremiah believes that, for the Giants to get Daniels, they’ll need to trade up to No. 3 by surrendering their sixth pick, their 2024 second-round selections, and then a 2025 second-rounder to snatch the LSU star.

Raanan is another who envisions the Giants entertaining the idea of relinquishing one of their second-round selections. Only, in this scenario, the Giants gain an additional first-rounder next to the sixth pick.

“So what happens over the next few weeks or months, that will strongly dictate what the Giants do either at the top of the first round or with the two second-round picks, potentially trading back into the end of the first round,” Raanan said.
