The New York Giants are one of many teams rumored to be interested in drafting a quarterback at the top of the 2024 NFL Draft. Although they did sign Daniel Jones to a four-year contract extension last offseason, his disappointing 2023 campaign, combined with inconsistent play throughout his five-year career, has the Giants reportedly considering drafting his replacement.
While ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter believes they will draft a quarterback this year, he doesn’t expect the Giants to take one with the sixth overall pick.
Adam Schefter Doesn’t Believe Giants Will Take QB at No. 6
Schefter joined New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard on the latest episode of Talkin Ball. When asked about the Giants and what they may look to do with their top pick, Schefter admitted that there’s a lot on the table but doesn’t believe drafting a QB at No. 6 is something they’re looking to do.
“To me, in the end, this is a team that has enough other needs, and a team that is trying to win now, that I wouldn’t guess that they go quarterback at six right now,” Schefter started.
“I do think there will be a quarterback selected with a pick that’s a relatively high pick, whether that’s in Round 2 or 3, or they move back up if a guy like Bo Nix or Michael Penix is available perhaps. But to me, to go quarterback at six, when there is going to be some incredible players on the board when they have some of the needs that they do, I think I would be a little surprised…”
Schefter isn’t speaking from a place of intel, but more of his opinion on the situation the Giants face, coupled with the talent around them at the spot and putting all things together.
Whether Schefter is right or not, remains to be seen, but the Giants clearly have other needs to attend to, and the NFL insider sees the team going in a different direction with their first selection.
LSU WR Malik Nabers a Giants Target?
While Schefter mentions that quarterback may not be the way to go for New York in Round 1, a premium WR talent in Malik Nabers could be too good to pass up when they’re on the clock, if he’s available.
It’s a player that Schefter made sure to speak on in the same interview. When discussing the LSU WR, he spoke to the fact that “NFL teams view Malik Nabers as this stick of dynamite. That explosive, that dynamic, and the comparison you hear is Tyreek Hill, like wow.”
While quarterback is a trendy pick at No. 6 for the Giants in mock drafts, Nabers is a common prediction for them in this spot as well. New York has had a need at wide receiver for quite some time. In fact, they haven’t had a player record at least 1,000 receiving yards since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2018 when Eli Manning was the starting QB.
The body of work for Nabers is special, and the tape is something that cannot be ignored. In Nabers’ draft profile from Pro Football Network’s Ian Cummings, it’s clear that what Schefter is hearing matches up for him as well.
“Nabers can be a dynamic offensive weapon on Day 1 of his NFL career, and in time, he has a perennial impact starter upside, with the three-level ability to be a focal point.”
The Giants have a chance to add a dangerous weapon to their offense with Nabers. Instead of looking to replace Jones, maybe New York opts to get him the help he so desperately needs.
