With just one more game to play to decide who takes home the Lombardi Trophy, let’s examine the results from the AFC and NFC Conference Championship Games. Which two teams are heading to SoFi Stadium for Super Bowl 56?
(4) Cincinnati Bengals 27, (2) Kansas City Chiefs 24
The Chiefs made the most of hosting their fourth-straight AFC Championship Game in the first half. Mahomes and his offense came roaring out of the blocks. At one point, the Chiefs led 21-3, and Mahomes was 13-of-14 for 154 yards with 3 passing touchdowns. The start for the Chiefs on both sides of the ball was as close to perfect as you could hope for.
However, the Bengals did not go down without a fight. The defense stepped up and kept Mahomes scoreless for the majority of the second half. Meanwhile, the offense scored 21 unanswered points to give Cincinnati the lead. The Chiefs marched down the field but could not win the game in regulation. After sending the game to overtime, Mahomes threw an interception, and the Bengals never gave them the ball back. They worked it inside field-goal range and kicked a second-straight walk-off field goal.
(4) Los Angeles Rams 20, (6) San Francisco 49ers 17
While the NFC Championship Game lacked the offensive firepower we saw at times in the AFC title game, it was equally as tight in its own way. After a relatively even first half, the 49ers got out to a 17-7 lead in the third quarter. However, the Rams battled back in the fourth quarter and kicked a late field goal to win 20-17.
The Rams were not convincing in victory, but they will now have the honor of hosting the final two NFL games of the 2021-22 season. The Rams’ trade for Matthew Stafford paid off, as the QB found Cooper Kupp in the end zone twice. LA’s defense never got a sack on Jimmy Garoppolo, but the pressure was crucial as they intercepted him in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
