‘I Could See That Happen’ – NFL Analyst Floats Ex-Dolphins Head Coach To Replace Jerod Mayo Amid Patriots’ Disastrous Season

    Published on

Jerod Mayo's days with the New England Patriots could be numbered said one NFL analyst -- could a former Dolphins head coach be a potential fit?

Jerod Mayo took charge of the New England Patriots as the chosen one. It was never going to be easy to replace one of the most successful head coaches of all time. But no one thought it would’ve been this disastrous.

The Patriots are in line to have the dubious honor of breaking the record of the fewest wins in a season since 1992. As such, NFL analyst Mike Florio contends Mayo could lose his position to Brian Flores.

Mike Florio: Jerod Mayo’s Days Could Be Numbered With Brian Flores in Line

After the Patriots’ humiliating 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, all hell has broken loose in Boston. The Patriots are at the bottom of the AFC East with a 3-13 record. Last year, Bill Belichick’s worst season ended with a 4-13 record.

“Jerod Mayo, his first season with the Patriots has been disastrous,” said Florio on his NBC show. “There have been so many times he’s said things, like, ugh… We want to give you a second chance. We want to give you a second season.

“I just wonder when the dust settles, whether or not he will be back. I’ve seen reporting that he’s safe. We’ll see. We’re a week away from having to make the final decision because I could see them moving on from Jerod Mayo and trying to hire Brian Flores. I could see that happen.”

Flores has several years of experience working within the Patriots system. He joined the Patriots in 2004 as a scouting assistant and rose through the ranks under Belichick.

After three seasons as the Miami Dolphins head coach, Flores spent a year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2023, he joined the Minnesota Vikings as the defensive coordinator and has done wonders for the NFC team.

However, the Patriots won’t be the only team eyeing Flores come next season. According to reports, the Chicago Bears are also interested in hiring Flores as their top coaching man in 2025.

On the other hand, Mayo has maintained that, despite the pressure, his job could be considered safe. “I’m always in constant communication with ownership, and feel like we’re still on the same page,” said Mayo to the press after the Chargers game.
