Brock Purdy emerged as the man in shining armor for the San Francisco 49ers as they headed to the Super Bowl 58 against the Kansas City Chiefs. While he was labeled as “Mr. Irrelevant” and a “system QB,’” Purdy did nothing but deliver in 2023.
Purdy’s performance regressed during the 2024 season, raising major concerns for the Niners, who are now tasked with making a decision regarding his future. Although he has many supporters, not everyone believes he deserves an extension just yet.

Mike Florio Has A Strong Take on Brock Purdy’s Contract Extension
Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025. According to Spotrac, he is currently signed to a four-year, $3,737,008 deal with the 49ers, including a $77,008 signing bonus, with an average annual salary of $934,252. In 2025, his base salary is set to be $5,265,000 while carrying a cap hit of $5,284,252 and a dead cap value of $19,252.
While his contract extension is looming, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio has a strong stance against extending the quarterback’s deal now.
In a discussion with Brad Graham of The SF Niners, Florio stated, “I wouldn’t sign him this year. I’d make him play another year. I think it’s undetermined. I would make him an offer based upon what we’ve seen so far. I don’t know what the magic number would be. The market’s currently $60 million per year. Would I offer him $35 to $40 million? Maybe.”

Florio’s comments won’t sit well with many 49ers fans, but his reasoning is hard to ignore. Purdy’s performance over the past two seasons has been a mixed bag. In 2023, Purdy was impressive, posting a 113.0 passer rating with 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 16 games, earning his first Pro Bowl selection.
However his 2024 season wasn’t as productive, with his passer rating dropping to 96.1. He threw for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 15 games.

This decline has fueled debate over whether the 49ers should commit to Purdy long-term. Given that he lacks elite physical traits, his ability to read defenses and make sound decisions is crucial. If he fails to show improvement in 2025, the 49ers might have to consider other options.
While Florio suggests otherwise, the 49ers front office is faced with a tough call between betting big on Purdy and letting him prove he’s worth it in his final year.
