As Dak Prescott’s Future in Dallas Looms, NFL Analyst Suggests He Could Win Super Bowl Elsewhere

Dak Prescott's time in Dallas could soon be at its end, and NFL analyst Devin McCourty suggested he might be able to win a Super Bowl elsewhere.

Dak Prescott’s time with the Dallas Cowboys has seen some highs and lows, with plenty of strong regular seasons but minimal playoff success compared to the franchise’s perennially high standards. With Prescott’s contract set to expire after the 2024 NFL season, speculation has begun to swirl as to what his future might hold.

Devin McCourty Suggests Dak Prescott’s Best Chance at a Super Bowl Is on Another Team

Rumors around Prescott’s future have only intensified in recent days after news broke that the Cowboys have not made any contract offers to him, and no talks of a new deal are imminent. Reports have since surfaced that Dallas does plan to ink a deal with Prescott down the line, but it’s unclear whether that will ultimately come to fruition.

NFL analyst Devin McCourty shared his thoughts Wednesday on Good Morning Football as to what Prescott should consider as his future looms, including a comparison to the careers of some all-time great quarterbacks.

McCourty said Prescott should look to the careers of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Kurt Warner, who each won Super Bowls after signing with new teams.

“When he sees those names, all of those guys went on to new teams and won Super Bowls,” McCourty said. “Is this a unique situation? No doubt about it. Any time a team comes out and says, ‘Hey, we talked, we mutually agreed that it’s not going to work out,’ they’re basically saying, ‘Hey buddy, we’ve got one year left and then we’re going to let you fly. We’re going to let you go wherever you want.'”

With this comparison, McCourty seemed to imply that Prescott could have a shot at winning a Super Bowl elsewhere despite his struggles for playoff success in Dallas.

McCourty also mentioned the influence being in a contract year can have on a player’s mindset, particularly that of a quarterback, and how the uncertainty can lead to focus turning away from the season at hand as players naturally survey their options.

He also cautioned the Cowboys and their fan base to be careful what they wish for if they do end up moving on from Prescott.

“You talk to different people, and they’re like, ‘Oh, we don’t need him. I’m ready for a new quarterback anyway,'” McCourty said. “Be careful. A lot of teams that have moved on to new quarterbacks, they went some years feeling pretty bad.”

Which Teams Might Be Interested in Signing Prescott?

In the event that Prescott does hit free agency in 2025, it seems likely that plenty of teams would be interested in signing him given his strong track record.

Prescott has thrown for 4,000+ yards and 30 or more touchdowns in each of his last three full seasons, with the 2022 and 2020 campaigns shortened due to injury. He was among the handful of top contenders for the NFL MVP award this past season after throwing for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in one of his best seasons to date.

The New Orleans Saints are one team that could present an intriguing fit for Prescott and be potentially interested in his services, if they can make it work financially. Derek Carr is still under contract through 2026 but has underwhelmed in New Orleans, and there seems to be some flexibility to move off his contract after the 2024 season. Prescott also grew up in Louisiana and could be intrigued by the prospect of playing in his home state.

The Los Angeles Rams could also make some sense for both sides if the aging Matthew Stafford elects to hang up his cleats after 2024. Sean McVay is certainly a coach who wants to win now and could get a productive replacement at quarterback in Prescott to aid in that pursuit with plenty of weapons around him.

The Seattle Seahawks might also look to make a move in the near future, depending on whether veteran QB Geno Smith sticks around. They did trade for Sam Howell as a backup option with upside this summer, but Seattle could be intrigued by Prescott’s more proven capabilities if they want to win sooner rather than later.

Time will tell how it all shakes out, but it’s clear Prescott would have plenty of suitors if he hits free agency in 2025.
