NFL Analyst Says Bears Have Best Situation for No. 1 Pick at QB in Last 30 Years

The Chicago Bears appear poised to draft Caleb Williams with the first overall pick, and Dan Orlovsky believes it's an ideal situation for a rookie QB.

After trading Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Chicago Bears are on the clock to select a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

While it’s permissible to assume that Caleb Williams will be the selection, nothing is set in stone quite yet. But after trading Fields, it’s almost definitely going to be a quarterback off the board first overall. One NFL analyst believes that whichever rookie quarterback the Bears elect to take, they will be set up for success in the Windy City.

Dan Orlovsky Says Bears Have Best Situation for No. 1 QB in Last 30 Years

On Wednesday, Dan Orlovsky said on Get Up that the Bears have the best situation for a No. 1 rookie quarterback that we’ve seen in the last 30 years.

“This is the best situation a No. 1 quarterback has gone to in at least 30 years,” Orlovsky said.

“The most relatable is maybe Andrew Luck going to Indianapolis because he had Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton,” Orlovsky said. “We’re talking about a situation where the skill group is clearly above average.”

The Bears have holdover receiver D.J. Moore still under contract and just traded a fourth-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers for Keenan Allen. And right when the NFL’s free agency window opened, the Bears agreed to a three-year deal with running back D’Andre Swift.

Cole Kmet is a decent pass catcher at tight end, and Orlovsky notes that the Bears have an above-average offensive line, too.

Typically, when a quarterback gets selected with the No. 1 overall pick, they’re going to a tumultuous situation where the team struggled greatly to get that spot. In this case, the Bears got the No. 1 overall pick from the Carolina Panthers in the trade that included Moore.

The Bears finished last season 7-10, good for third place in the NFC North. They still have their own draft pick at No. 9 overall as well.

Head coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles were both retained by the Bears, who have the longest winless streak in the playoffs of all teams in the NFC North.

The Packers rebounded quickly after losing Aaron Rodgers, already winning a playoff game with Jordan Love. The Lions just made it to the NFC Championship Game. And the Vikings have a decent roster and will likely be drafting a quarterback in the first round.
