Which Teams Are the Best and Worst at Covering the Spread in 2023?

The Cowboys broke away from a six-team tie to top the ATS standings entering Week 15 of the 2023 season. Dallas was the only team in that group of six to cover last week, defeating the Eagles at home in a must-win encounter.

At the other end of the table, the Panthers returned to the bottom after the Patriots’ victory over the Steelers and their loss to the Saints.

In Week 15, the Panthers face the Falcons, who are 4-9 ATS themselves this season. Carolina is currently three-point underdogs against their NFC South rival. That is almost exactly the same spread as when they faced in Week 1 when the Falcons came out on top 24-10.

Carolina returns home after a three-game road stand, where they went 1-2 ATS. The Panthers are 1-3-1 ATS at home this season but have failed to cover in their last two home games. The Falcons’ failure to win and cover last week was their first straight-up and ATS defeat in three games. On the road, they have a 2-4 record ATS and are 2-2 when favored.

Normally you would look to bet against the Panthers, but the Falcons are hardly a trustworthy team to take ATS either. Yet, Carolina failed to cover last week against a New Orleans team that had only covered two times all season before last week. Taking Atlanta laying three is tough, but it would be a better play than taking the Panthers getting the points, unless this line gets to 4.5 or above by Sunday.

The Cowboys will be looking to stay hot this week in Buffalo. They have now won five straight, covering in four of those five. The current line has the Cowboys as slight underdogs, which is a position they have struggled in this season. The Cowboys are 0-2 ATS when playing as the underdogs, and both times it was on the road.

Meanwhile, the Bills are just 5-8 ATS this season and have covered just twice in their last nine games. As favorites, they are 4-6 on the season, but three of those covers came in the first four weeks. Since Week 5 the Bills are 1-5 ATS as favorites and 1-3 ATS when playing at home.

The Cowboys’ two ATS losses came when facing the 49ers and Eagles on the road. While the Bills are playing decent football right now, they are not the same caliber of opponents as the 49ers and Eagles. The Cowboys getting points feels like too good of an opportunity to pass up, even in a clear let-down spot such as this one.
