Perhaps the most discussed subject when it comes to NFL betting trends is a team’s record against the spread (ATS) in the current season. Betting ATS is still one of the most wagered-on elements each week, so knowing which teams are good and bad against the line set by the sportsbooks is crucial. Entering Week 13, let’s examine the current ATS standings for the 2023 season.

Which Teams Are the Best and Worst at Covering the Spread in 2023?
After having a four-way tie atop the standings last week, the Cowboys and Jaguars now stand alone with 8-3 ATS records. The Eagles are narrowly behind with a 7-2-2 record but have actually seen bettors at least get their money back more often than the other two. At the other end of the spectrum remains the Panthers (1-8-2), who fired their head coach this week.
The Cowboys have now covered their last three and five of their last six. They’ve also covered their last six games as favorites, have an 8-1 record when favored, and are 5-0 ATS at home. In Week 13, Dallas is favored by nine points against a Seahawks team that is on the ropes after losing three of their last four games.
Seattle has only covered once in their last four games and are 2-3 ATS as underdogs. However, the Cowboys last defeated a team with a winning record back in Week 2, when they beat the then 1-0 New York Jets, who have since fallen away badly. Dallas’ .308 strength of victory is the lowest among the 14 teams currently occupying a playoff spot this season.
The Jaguars have covered their last two and seven of their last eight. Barring a wobble against the 49ers coming off their bye, the Jaguars have been superb this season when favored, with a 6-1 record.
This week, Jacksonville faces a Bengals team still looking for an identity under new starting QB Jake Browning. It’s worth noting that covering in Week 13 would be the highest margin (-8.5) the Jaguars have covered in the 2023 season. The only other time they were favored by more than a touchdown they lost outright to the Texans in Week 3.

The Panthers are an intriguing proposition with the changes in the coaching structure. You would think that uncertainty could harm a team, but we often see teams rally and perform well in the first week with an interim head coach. The Las Vegas Raiders covered as favorites in Antonio Pierce’s first game after taking over from Josh McDaniels, for example.
However, Carolina faces a team in the Buccaneers that has been strong against the spread in general this year (7-4). This will only be the fourth time Tampa Bay has been favored this season, and they’re 2-1 ATS in those previous games. This line of the Buccaneers -5.5 is a tough one to decipher after Reich was fired on Monday.
