Garrett Wilson was drafted 10th overall by the Jets in the 2022 NFL Draft -- what is his rookie contract and fit on the depth chart?

With the 10th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected Ohio State WR Garrett Wilson. What will Wilson’s rookie contract look like, and where does he project into the Jets’ current depth chart?

Garrett Wilson drafted 10th overall by the New York Jets

Wilson was a second-team All-Big Ten and All-American selection in 2021. However, he was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2020. Olave and Wilson become the seventh pair of wide receiver teammates selected in the first round of the same NFL Draft since 1967.

    Wilson’s projected rookie contract

Because Wilson was the 10th overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, this is what his projected rookie contract should look like. Contract numbers are from Over the Cap.

    • Total Value: $23.5 million
    • Signing Bonus: $14.3 million
    • 2022 Base Salary: $705,000
    • 2022 Cap Number: $4.3 million

Wilson’s strengths and areas to improve

Here is a snapshot of what the Jets will be getting with the selection of Wilson. For further information, check out Wilson’s full scouting report.

    Strengths

    • Explodes vertically, high-points passes, and owns excellent ball-tracking ability
    • Has the suddenness to gain separation and swift/precise feet
    • Shifty ball carrier with the elusiveness to make defenders miss in space

    Areas for improvement

    • Can round off his routes on occasion, some wasted motion
    • Prone to focus drops when he anticipates contact
    • Not a great run blocker

How does Wilson project in the Jets’ depth chart?

Wilson and Sauce Gardner are a great pairing for the Jets. They address two of their biggest needs in the first two picks of their draft. While Elijah Moore and Corey Davis are a good duo, Wilson adds another weapon to an offense doing everything in their power to make life easy for Zach Wilson.

Zach Wilson struggled as a rookie, but the excuses will run out quickly with this receiving corps. Garrett Wilson fits the offense well — he should be able to turn into a precise route runner with some seasoning. And he’s dynamic after the catch, which is imperative in the Shanahan-style offensive attack.

When do the Jets pick next in the 2022 NFL Draft?

As of the time they drafted Wilson, the Jets have these remaining picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

    • Round 2 (Pick 35)
    • Round 2 (Pick 38 from Panthers)
    • Round 3 (Pick 69)

    • Round 4 (Pick 117 from Vikings)
    • Round 5 (Pick 146)
    • Round 5 (Pick 163 from Steelers)
