New Changes to the Jets’ Staff

Again, with a new quarterback — let alone a past Super Bowl winner and surefire future Hall of Famer in Aaron Rodgers — a coach with expertise in working with the longtime Green Bay Packers signal-caller was needed for Saleh.

In comes Nathaniel Hackett, the offensive coordinator behind Rodgers’ back-to-back MVP-winning seasons of 2020 and 2021. That was during a span when Rodgers threw a combined 85 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. Without Hackett, Rodgers’ numbers dipped to 26 touchdowns with 12 interceptions plus 3,695 yards.

Outside of Hackett, Keith Carter was added to reignite the running game while also working with the offensive line. Carter spent his last five seasons with the Tennessee Titans and head coach Mike Vrabel, while also getting his unit to clear lanes for Derrick Henry. Carter isn’t the only one coming from Nashville, as former offensive coordinator Todd Downing joined the staff as passing game coordinator.

Staying with the offense, John Vieira is another newcomer. He was hired in February after being with Hackett in Denver.

The only defensive hire Saleh and the Jets made in the offseason was bringing in Shaq Wilson. Wilson spent a decade in the college game coaching up the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC as a defensive analyst. His hire replaced Greg Scruggs, who left his post to enter the CFB game with nearby Rutgers.

The rest of Saleh’s ’23 staff comprises of veterans who were with him since his 2021 hire. That includes defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich — one of Saleh’s first hires. Boyer additionally has been with Saleh, though he’s one of the longer-tenured Jets coaches, having been with the franchise since 2016 and working with the previous regimes before Saleh.
