The Patriots have involved themselves in quite a few trades over the past cycle. Indeed, those trades have helped shape the allotment of draft capital they have in store this coming April. Currently, New England has eight total picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. They own one selection in Rounds 1, 2, 3, and 4, while they have two choices each in Round 5 and Round 6.
The Patriots traded their original fifth- and seventh-round picks to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Trent Brown. They received a sixth-round pick in exchange for veteran offensive guard Shaq Mason, who they traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Finally, they acquired an extra fifth-round pick (along with Parker) from Miami while sending a 2023 third-round selection to the Dolphins.
New England then traded with the Houston Texans to open draft weekend. They sent their fifth-round pick (No. 170) to Houston in exchange for Houston’s sixth-round pick (No. 183) and a seventh-round selection (No. 245).
New England Patriots 2022 NFL Draft team needs
Even after adding Parker, New England could still look to add another receiver for Mac Jones in a deep 2022 class. There’s still a sense that the Patriots don’t have a true No. 1 pass catcher, although the unit has good rotational depth with Parker, Kendrick Bourne, Jakobi Meyers, and Nelson Agholor.
With eight picks at their disposal, the Patriots can undoubtedly add more talent to their receiver room. Nevertheless, the trade for Parker moves the position down the priority list and gives the Patriots more flexibility to attack more significant areas of need. Most pressing among those areas of need is cornerback, especially after the loss of J.C. Jackson to the Chargers in free agency. But there are other needs to address as well. The list of the Patriots’ top needs in the 2022 NFL Draft is as follows:
- Cornerback
- Linebacker
- Guard
- Offensive Tackle
- Defensive End
