What Happened to Ausar Thompson? Pistons Star Suffers Upsetting Leg Injury In Blowout Win

Ausar Thompson has played a pivotal role in the Detroit Pistons’ resurgence this season. His energy and defense has made the Pistons quite the formidable foe for any opponent.

That’s what made it pretty terrifying when he went down with a non-contact injury during the Pistons’ victory over the Boston Celtics.

Ausar Thompson Suffered An Unspecified Leg Injury During Pistons’ Win

Thompson tried to take on Al Horford in an iso before slipping on the court, causing him to fall while writhing in pain.

Making it worse was that when this all happened, the game had pretty much already been decided. The Pistons took a timeout to check on Thompson. He needed a minute, but he managed to walk out under his own power, which would indicate that he managed to avoid anything serious.

The Athletic’s Hunter Thompson later reported that, per the Pistons, Thompson suffered a right calf cramp.

All things considered, it could have been much worse for Thompson and the Pistons. Luckily, it appears that his injury shouldn’t impact his availability much. If he had gotten hurt, that would have been bad news for the Pistons, and not just because of how good Thompson has been this season.

The 2024-25 season is on track to be the best season the Pistons have had since the 2007-08 season when they last made the Eastern Conference Finals. Thompson’s done his part in making the season both successful and fun for MoTown.

Considering the Pistons already lost Jaden Ivey earlier this season, losing Thompson as well would make for quite the buzzkill, especially with the playoffs just around the corner. Luckily, things didn’t turn out that way.

The Pistons have been peaking at the right time. By beating the Celtics, ie, the reigning NBA Champions, they have both won eight games in a row – which hasn’t been done since the aforementioned season above – and signaled that they are not a team to be trifled with this season.

After years of ranging between simply average and one of the NBA’s worst teams for over a decade, the Pistons look like they will have finally attained some relevance again. They deserve to see how things play out with their roster. For the time being, it appears they have avoided what would have unqestionably been a devastating injury with Thompson.

Here’s to hoping they avoid the injury bug from here on out. More than that, let’s hope there aren’t anymore scares along the way.
