Amen Thompson is in the middle of a breakout season with the Houston Rockets. But the point guard exited the Houston Rockets game against the New Orleans Pelicans on March 8 early due to injury.
Now, the young star could be sidelined for multiple games as the Rockets navigate a crucial stretch of their season.
NBA Insider Provides Update on Amen Thompson’s Injury
Thompson was at his best against the Pelicans in a dominant win. But with less than six minutes remaining, he fell awkwardly on his left ankle while attempting a shot. He had to leave the game just one rebound shy of a triple-double.
The fourth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, and 11 assists as the Rockets cruised to a 146-117 victory. But his injury left fans concerned, fearing the worst.
ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania, in his report, said an MRI on Thompson’s ankle showed no structural damage. However, the point guard will undergo rehab and is expected to miss about two weeks.
“Houston Rockets emerging two-way force Amen Thompson will be sidelined for 10 to 14 days because of a left ankle sprain, sources told ESPN. An MRI on the ankle Sunday showed no structural damage, but Thompson will receive treatment for swelling and rehab,” Charania reported.
Thompson’s Absence Will Strain the Rockets’ Bench
This season, Thompson has made an impact on both ends of the floor. The 22-year-old, known for his athleticism and defensive ability, has been ranked among the top 10 candidates for Defensive Player of the Year.
He is averaging 14 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game in 59 games this season. With Thompson out, Houston’s bench will have to step up to keep the team in strong playoff position.
The Rockets are on a two-game winning streak with a 39-25 record. They are fifth in the Western Conference, just a half-game behind the Memphis Grizzlies for home-court advantage in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
Houston will face the Orlando Magic at Toyota Center on March 10, with tipoff at 8 p.m. EST.
