Nothing seems to be working for the Philadelphia 76ers at the moment. The 2024-25 NBA season has proven to be a disaster for them. The 76ers hold a 20-38 record, placing them 12th in the Eastern Conference. With only 24 games left, their chances of making the playoffs are slim.
How could they make a turnaround and come out of their situation? NBA veteran Ron Harper has the answer, but it required shutting down some of the biggest stars
Ron Harper Suggests a Radical Move to Strengthen 76ers Roster
Above anything, injuries have significantly impacted the 76ers’ performance. Star center Joel Embiid has played just 19 games this season, averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. Recently, Embiid has been exploring alternative treatments for a persistent knee injury, including potential season-ending surgery. In a game against the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday, Feb. 22, he was benched during the final quarter, contributing to the team’s seventh consecutive loss..
Paul George, another key player, has also faced difficulties. After signing a four-year, $212 million contract with the 76ers this offseason, George has experienced a decline in performance, averaging 16.2 points per game. In light of the team’s struggles, including a nine-game losing streak, George announced a pause to his podcast to focus on improving his physical and mental condition.
Given these challenges, five-time NBA champion Ron Harper suggested a strategic move. Harper, who played alongside Michael Jordan and won championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, recommended that the 76ers consider shutting Joel Embiid down and Paul George too to secure a high lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
“If I was the GM of @sixers, I’d be shutting Joel Embiid down and thinking about shutting Paul George down too and hoping we get a high lottery pick… TANK,” Harper wrote on X.

However, this approach carries risks. The 76ers owe their top-six protected 2025 first-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder. If their pick falls below sixth, they will lose it, making the decision to “tank” a gamble. Additionally, the team’s recent performance, including a narrow 110-105 loss to the New York Knicks, highlights ongoing struggles despite efforts from players like Tyrese Maxey, who scored 30 points in that game.
As the season progresses, the 76ers face critical decisions about prioritizing player health and future prospects. At the moment, Harper’s suggestion seems essential as they navigate the remainder of the season.
