When Bronny James was drafted to the Los Angeles Lakers, there was talk and criticism that the young offspring of LeBron James was not ready to be in the NBA. Bronny’s development through his single season at USC did not leave fans excited for the prospect of his individual play, but the idea of watching LeBron and his son play together was very intriguing.
Many have expressed their feelings about Bronny James’ growth and level of play during his rookie season, but one former NBA All-Star provided some truthful words directly to his agent, Rich Paul.
Kenyon Martin Tells Rich Paul That Bronny James Needs Time in the G League
While appearing on the “Gil’s Arena” show, Kenyon Martin spoke with the panel, which included Paul, and he detailed what he feels will help Bronny’s long-term development.

“He needs the reps. Let him play his uninterrupted G League minutes, then when their season is over, bring him up.
“Trying to get your feet wet within the season, it’s tough for a coach to implement a freshman for one, so he’s behind the eight ball, so to speak.
“But he’s in a good position now that you guys have put me in the G League thing, just letting him play 40 minutes a night, you’re going to get these minutes, you’re going to get these shots.”
Paul agreed with Martin, stating that the G League used to be called the D League because the “D” was for development. They both agreed it would help Bronny’s growth as well.
Bronny James’ G League Success and Development
Since entering the G League, James has looked much better in those extended minutes as opposed to his time in the NBA. In the NBA, he’s only averaged 4.2 minutes per game, whereas he’s receiving an average of 26.9 in the G League.
His scoring output obviously shows a difference as well, scoring 13.4 points per game in the G League, compared to 1.4 at the NBA level.
While James’ shooting splits are not great (36% from the field and 21% from 3-point range), these moments in the G League will help his development and further his growth in the NBA for future years.
Martin’s words and Paul’s agreement showcase that everyone sees Bronny James’ potential. It remains to be seen how things will play out in the future, but the G League is a great place to start.
