The Dallas Mavericks have had a streak of bad luck since they made the trade for Anthony Davis. After the trade was completed that sent their franchise superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Mavericks have witnessed their top players all go down to serious injuries.
Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively, two of their front court players, have been inactive for extended periods, while Davis himself is currently out for an injury. Without sufficient front court players to handle things, the Mavericks have slipped in the Western Conference to the 10th seed.
While the 10th seed is still a part of the play-in, the Mavericks received some very disheartening news that could see them fall out of that 10th seed in the coming weeks before the end of the season.
Kendrick Perkins Thinks The Mavericks’ Season Is Over
Kyrie Irving went down during the Mavericks game against the Sacramento Kings, leaving many to wonder what this means for his future with the team.
Kendrick Perkins spoke about the injuries to both Irving and Davis, explaining that he thinks the Mavericks should shut them both down before the end of the year:
“If I’m the Dallas Mavericks, I shut everybody down. It’s only a month and a half left in the season, the injury Anthony Davis is dealing with is something you can’t rush.”
“If you don’t have a healthy Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, it’s no reason to try to finish the season at a strong rate…. shut those two guys down and let them get healthy.”
Kyrie Irving Suffers Season-Ending Injury
While Perkins did make a strong point about shutting both of those players down, it seems as if Irving’s season is unfortunately being cut short due to a devastating torn ACL injury suffered in that game against the Kings.
Irving would suffer the injury early in the game, staying in long enough to shoot two free throws with tears in his eyes. The season-ending injury is yet another blow to the Mavericks, but it is extremely tough for Irving, who is heading into the offseason as a free agent.
With the decision making that the Mavericks have displayed so far, the question is now what happens next? Will the Mavericks attempt to sign Irving to a long-term deal with this injury recovery on the table? Will Davis be shut down for the rest of the season because of this news?
There are many big decisions ahead for the Mavericks, but there’s very little faith right now in GM Nico Harrison after what occurred with the Donĉić trade. Irving’s future with the Mavericks is unknown, but let’s just hope and wish he makes a full recovery.
