Draymond Green’s Surprise Revelation Threatens To Change the Trajectory of Golden State Warriors Franchise

Given that Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr’s contract is ending in 2026, who will be his successor? It appears the Warriors already have a man in sight to carry forward their legacy and guide them to new heights, and it’s none other than their defensive anchor Draymond Green.

Draymond Green as Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors?

During All-Star weekend, the four-time NBA champion dropped the shocking news that the Warriors offered him the head coaching role for whenever he retires.

Initially, fans wondered if he was being serious, and it turns out he was. This isn’t the first time that Green has talked about this — he also discussed the offer on John Wall’s “Point Game” podcast, providing a bit more information.

“I’m honored, man, with the conversations I’ve had with [Warriors owner] Joe Lacob over the years, and him saying to me like, ‘Yo when you’re done, I could see you one day coaching this team when Steve’s done,'” Green shared.

“That means the world to me because that means the man that owns the organization that I play for, is watching me play basketball and saying, this guy can one day coach my team.”

NBA fans were surprised to hear that Green could become Golden State’s head coach someday. However, the idea of him taking the role isn’t far-fetched.

Green has a reputation for being aggressive on the court, and his defensive prowess is already well known. He is often described as the Warrior’s emotional anchor, known for his defensive IQ, intensity, and leadership. In the 2024-25 season, he is averaging 8.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game.

However, there’s some concern as well. Green’s fiery personality has on more than one occasion put him in trouble. You can count his multiple suspensions, on-court altercations, and locker-room tensions.

As a coach, keeping composure and nurturing talent with patience will be paramount. Green has been criticized for not keeping it cool in the past, which will definitely be a challenge as a coach.

Green’s Former Warriors Teammate Kevin Durant Thinks He Would Thrive As HC

Green patrolling the sidelines as the team’s coach didn’t go over well with some fans and players alike. Green’s comment came in response to former WNBA star Candace Parker, who was asked if she would ever become a coach. She responded, “There’s no way that I could coach, ever, in history. It would be like Draymond coaching… like there’s no way.”

“Wow! I have already been offered the Golden State Warriors’ head coaching job… You think [I’d] suck?” Green responded.

Parker clarified that she didn’t think Green would enjoy coaching, mentioning his lack of patience. “You would not be able to coach,” she added.

At that point, Green acknowledged that she was right: “I agree. You’re right, I’m sorry.”

While Parker couldn’t envision Coach Green, his former Warriors teammate Kevin Durant actually loved the idea. Durant thinks Green would thrive as a coach and be even better in that role than he is as an analyst.

“I think Draymond would be an incredible head coach,” Durant said. “I think he’d be a better head coach than he would be a TV analyst. He’s pretty good at that.

“I just think he loves being on the floor; he loves teaching, he loves that competitive nature of competing on the court. I think if he were to go into TV, he would just be clawing and itching to get back on the floor.”

For now, Kerr remains the Warriors’ head coach, and Green is focused on his playing career.

However, the four-time All-Star’s surprising revelation has ignited rumors about the Warriors’ future and led to debates about how he’d fare as a coach.
