De’Aaron Fox Unfollows Former Kings Teammate Domantas Sabonis After Trade to Spurs, Admits They Weren’t ‘Close’ in 11-Word Message

The Sacramento Kings are still dealing with the De’Aaron Fox fallout. Even though Fox hasn’t been on the team for a week, give or take, there have still been some parting shots on his side.

Fox was exposed for unfollowing former Kings teammate Domantas Sabonis on Instagram. After a fan called him out for it, Fox gave some brutally honest thoughts on his former All-Star running mate.

De’Aaron Fox Says He And Sabonis Were Not Close

In an Instagram exchange with a fan, Fox said he doesn’t follow Sabonis because he “doesn’t care to see it.” He then followed that up with “we were teammates… it’s ok not to be close to everybody.”

Fox didn’t elaborate further on the matter, though his actions indicate that he really wants to put everything with Sacramento firmly in the past and focus more on the present with his current team, the San Antonio Spurs.

The baffling part is that Fox felt the urge to explain himself when he didn’t have to. Unfollowing Sabonis said enough on its own.

It was later confirmed that Sabonis also unfollowed Fox on Instagram, thus signifying that neither felt the need to check up on the other after they parted ways as teammates. Star teammates have dissolved their unions before and still kept in touch when their time playing together was over.

Such was not the case with Fox and Sabonis. Evidently, they saw this as a working partnership. However, it’s possible they did but then Fox’s trade request led to a falling out. What makes it weirder is that Fox had never been one to involve himself with controversy until his spontaneous trade request surfaced.

Fox and Sabonis were teammates from 2022 to 2025. Together, they brought the Kings to new heights they hadn’t seen since Metta Sandiford-Artest went by Ron back when he played for Sacramento.

In the end, Fox and Sabonis got what they wanted from the situation when it was all said and done. The former got to the team he wanted to play for, while his blockbuster trade sent the Kings a fellow All-Star in Zach LaVine. The Kings’ playoff aspirations are still very much alive, even with Fox no longer on the team.

However, more details are sure to come from this situation. A few weeks ago, it seemed like everything was perfectly fine for the Kings, and the next thing the public knew, they made a seismic mid-season trade. These situations don’t typically just sprout out of nowhere.
