$12 Million Profit Awaits Shai Gilgeous-Alexander After Career-Deciding Decision as OKC Thunder Extension Nears

As the Oklahoma City Thunder returned from the NBA All-Star break, superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made an executive decision to change his representation. According to senior NBA insider Chris Haynes, Gilgeous-Alexander will reportedly move on from his representation and serve as his own agent.

Gilgeous-Alexander was previously represented by Thad Foucher and Joe Smith of Wasserman Group. The decision comes months before SGA will be eligible to sign a four-year, $293 million supermax extension that could keep him in Oklahoma City until the 2030-31 season, and the decision to fire his agent seems to have come at the right time.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander To Save Nearly $12 Million in New Contract Extension

Gilgeous-Alexander is a young NBA superstar and a top candidate for MVP this season. He’s currently under contract through the 2026-27 season.

The 26-year-old All-Star is in the third year of his five-year, $179,299,750 contract, making nearly $36 million this season. However, he’s eligible to sign a four-year, $293 million supermax extension this summer. And if he does sign it by serving as his own agent, he could save $12 million that would have gone to Wasserman as agent fees at 4%.

Michael Jordan’s former agent, David Falk, told Front Office Sports that players like Gilgeous-Alexander would get a maximum contract without agents.

“If you’re LeBron, [Shai], Stephen Curry, a guy like that doesn’t need an agent to negotiate his contract,” said Falk. “I think Shai is terrific as one of the bright young stars in the league. To do his contract, he doesn’t need an agent. He’s going to get the max with his eyes closed.”

Gilgeous-Alexander wouldn’t be the only one to sign an extension by serving as his own agent. Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid represented himself on his last contract, while James Harden went six years without a full-time agent.

Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander is in his best form this season and is the leader of the 44-10 Thunder. He is currently averaging an NBA-high 32.2 points as well as 6.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game.

OKC is tied with the NBA’s best record, mainly because of his efforts. The second half of the season is at hand as OKC looks to clinch the No. 1 seed and hope for a deep playoff run with Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way.

The 6’6″, 195-point guard has been in the NBA for seven seasons, appearing in 82 games with the Clippers and 358 games with the Thunder. He is averaging 24.0 points, 5.0 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals throughout his career.
