MLB News: Texas Rangers’ Rotation in Trouble After $56M Pitcher’s Shocking Wrist Injury

The Texas Rangers’ pitching rotation is dealing with some more setbacks, and Jon Gray just faced what might be his worst injury yet. A fiery 106.4 mph line drive knocked him out of a spring training game, adding to a growing list of troubling setbacks.

With Opening Day looming, the team might need to quickly figure things out.

Texas Rangers’ Pitching Woes Deepen Amid Spring Training Setbacks

Gray exited the spring training game with a trainer after taking a 106.4 mph line drive to the bat from Michael Toglia.

He had a solid start, keeping the opposition scoreless in the first three innings. He gave up just four hits, struck out two batters, and didn’t walk anyone.

TV and radio broadcaster Jared Sandler said, “First of all, just feel for Johnny. He’s had some really bad luck starting with his first ever start with Rangers hurting his knee coming off the mound trying to field his position.”

“We were talking a couple weeks ago and he said that his goal this year was 200 innings, 200 strikeouts. He felt healthy after neuroma in his foot last year that cost him the end of the season,” Sandler said.

As reported by Manny Randhawa from MLB.com on X, there is not much information regarding Gray’s injury and recovery.

Gray has encountered several injuries at key moments throughout his career. In 2019, he was forced to take a break because of foot and ankle complications. The following year, shoulder issues hindered his performance.

In 2021, he had to deal with elbow and forearm injuries. After signing with the Rangers in 2022, he faced blisters and knee problems that restricted his starts. By the 2024 season, he was battling groin strains and a foot neuroma, leading to several spells on the injured list.

One X user remarked on how the injury series has just begun.

“Andddd the injury parade has begun. [Cody] Bradford is always hurt, [Josh] Jung, [Adolis] GarcĂa, Wyatt [Langford], these dudes suck,” one user said.

And the prayers from another user: “It begins. Feel for Jon, he’s a great guy. Heal up”

Rangers Rotation Health Could Decide the Fate of Their 2025 Season

This spring has been rough on the Rangers’ pitching lineup with injuries. Earlier this week, Bradford was put on hold with left elbow soreness. He will be out of the lineup for at least a week and won’t pitch until at least a week after the season opener.

A sore forearm prevented Tyler Mahle from playing in a recent game. Thankfully, his MRI showed no structural problems and it came back clear, but the team is being careful about his next steps.

Jacob deGrom, an important part of the rotation, recently had a start canceled but still got to pitch in a minor league game to keep up his workload. With his history of injuries, any missed start is a bit worrying, but he’s still on schedule for the season.

Even fighting injuries, Gray has shown incredible toughness and put up nice performances. The best moment for him was May 13, 2016 by defeating the New York Mets in his first major league win. He was also dealing with a strained abdominal muscle that kept him off the field earlier this season.

The team’s chances for a successful season could be heavily influenced on the health and effectiveness of their pitching staff.
