A season ago, the New York Yankees won the AL East with a 94-68 record. They were one of the best teams in the entire MLB.
The 2025 season could be different for them. Considered one of the favorites to win the AL East before Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil were injured, things could be different now. Will the Yankees still be the favorites to win the division or could another team like the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles win the division instead? This could be a wide open division now.
Red Sox Named AL East Favorite Entering 2025 Season Over Yankees
Jake Storiale of the “Wake N Jake” podcast talked about what the injury to Cole means to the Yankees and the rest of the AL East moving forward.
“It seems like Gerrit Cole will be getting Tommy John. The Yankees are still a very good team. I do wonder if they should still be considered the favorites in the AL East,” Storiale said.
“The Boston Red Sox, who had this amazing offseason, Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman, two massive adds, along with a youth revolution? [Jarren] Duran coming up to the level he’s at, we’ve got top prospects on the way, Walker Buehler is there — Red Sox are set up.”

Interestingly, he thinks that the Red Sox are a better baseball team entering the 2025 season than the Baltimore Orioles. As of right now on FanDuel Sportsbook, the Yankees are still the favorites to win the AL East at +165 odds. The Red Sox and the Orioles have the same odds to win the division at +270. After them, the Tampa Bay Rays have +700 odds to win the division and the Toronto Blue Jays are +1000.

There is a chance that this could be the toughest division in the MLB this season. The last time that the Red Sox won the AL East was in 2018. The last time that the Blue Jays won the AL East was in 2015. Tampa Bay last won the division in 2022, and Baltimore won the division in 2023.
Another reason why Boston could win the division is because they have the best one-two punch with Crochet and Buehler. Rafael Devers, Trevor Story, and Bregman will also be key players in the Red Sox lineup. Boston arguably has a much deeper lineup than the Yankees do behind superstar Aaron Judge.
